I am planning on setting up a Teamspeak2 server on Linux. This server should have a maximum of 20 people speaking on it at one time and will only be used for Teamspeak. What is the minimum hardware (processor speed, MB RAM) that would be required to run a system of this type?

Thank you

Well, i was running a TS server on my old K6/3-400 with 256MB RAM. Due to my connection restrictions (768/128 kbit ADSL) no more than 10 people were using it, but even then it barely used any memory or CPU cycles.
It's safe to assume if you only want 20 people max on your server you can take the slowest dedicated server offered and it will still be more than enough.

Sounds about right

I am running it on a P-III 300 mhz with 256 mb ram, under fedora
Havent done ay tweaking whatsoever, and the old box is also mildly used as a file-server

I've had more than 20 people on it without any problems

I've got the server running on my Linux box which is just a mere P120 with 64Mb RAM and it runs fine :)

Thank you for your quick responses. I guess this old Pentium 166 just got a new lease on life. :)

I hoard legacy equipment for just this type of server.

Don't forget, if you use Windows on the server, you'll need a powerful system to run that.

I use cut-down linux distros at the bare minimum needed to provide the TS box.

I'm hoping to get an ulta-slimline dedicated server soon with a good chunk of bandwidth so I can start licencing and reselling TS servers :)

hehehe... :D
dzaztur statet that he'll plan to use a linux to run the server. So he's on the right side already !

I wouldn't want to try running a current windows on a 166'er P

I wonder if BSD would allow you to go for an even 'lighter' system?

I keep meaning to experiment with BSD and in my line of work, I'm going to have to sooner or later :D

Current Windows OR the newer Linux Distro's

If your going to run Linux on a P166 I would recommend strip everything off including KDE and Gnome.

Run it in text mode, you will no have any overhead that you wont need that way.

Personally I wouldn't use anything less than a P233 w/MMX or K6 266 w/3dNow.

IRON is just finishing testing the Linux version (We have used the Windows version since V1).

We had 36+ members on a AMD K6-2 450 with 128mb ram, no issues!

Just lower the codec to something like speex 7.2 this will give you the best mix of quality and server/bandwidth usage.
