Low pitch distortion, with my 'cure'

Well, I've searched the forums and FAQ but not found anything on this.
I got the new 2.0.32.60 client and I sounded like a stoned frog!
Or else I sounded fine and everyone else sounded that way. Random.
Even the announcements sounded bad. Pitch was ridiculously low.

I have Win 98 SE so I wondered if this version didn't support it.
I went to the 'Old Files' and tried 2028 and the sound problem went away
but that version wouldn't connect. Next was 2029 which worked like a charm!

I have not yet tried 2031. Anyone else have this problem?

does it only happen when a special other player is on the server with you? (could be possible that he destroys the sound-stream)

Nope, it's also the announcements and local test mode, any Codec.
Not even connected to a server! Version 2031 also fails.
My soundcard never gave any problems before this, it's built into MB.
Device Manager says it's a: VIA PCI Audio Controller (WDM)
