Muffled Quiet Sound From Mic

The sound that is being picked up from my mic is very quiet. It sounds like im talking through a pillow. All of the volume control options are set to their maximums. I was thinking that it has something to do with the EAX software that my sound card uses but I have turned off all of the effects that I know about and increased the volume of the mic.
Also if the mic input on my audigy's face plate does not get recieved by windows or any no creative software. Can I get the mic input on the face plate of my audigy card to work with this software? Thanks for any imput.

when you go to Properties for your Sound,
( click on the speaker in your Taskbar - or if its not there, then open your control panel and go to Sound and AudioDevice Properties: Advanced under Device Volume.
When that window pops up, OPTIONS - > Properties -> Recording, and make sure that MICROPHONE is selected, and that volume slider is all the way up.
this might help, if not, post a lil more info here as to what OS you are running.
