I am new to networking and need help with how to forward ports that TSS uses to my Belkin router. Thank you for your help.

I was going to say :

Go to CompUSA and ask for a portforwarder. They are running a special for $19.95, only this week. Make sure you ask for one with a Belkin adapter, they are usually purple. Insist on one without a manual!

but decided against it because of your very polite question.

So here is it; since portforwarding is very router specific, there is no real cookbook to do this. Best thing would be to read the Belkin manula or go to the belkin website to find out.
What also may help is to type "belkin" in the search-fuction of this forum, 10:1 the question is asked before.
Personally I got rid of the Belkin because mine always died after a few months

I can't find my manual. There is no specific information about how to do this with a Belkin router anywhere on this site that I can find. I have searched. If anybody has a Belkin router and can tell me how to set up my router to accept people trying to connect to the TSS it would be very appreciated.

p.s. if you really would like to be helped you could give us at least the model/serial number of the box

This is usually done via a web interface. I don't know your specific setup, but try surfing to http://192.168.0.1, and see if your router's web interface answers. From there, it's usually pretty self-explanatory. Basically, you give the router the number of the port you wish to open, and the IP address of the computer to which data arriving at the port is to be directed.

You'll need to know the private IP address of the computer to which you wish the port forwarded...

F5D5230-4 is the model #

EDIT: using the guide I downloaded I found out that I needed to browse to 192.168.2.1:88

There I have found the interface I need to set up a virtual server, I guess that is what TSS is. I know it uses port 8767 is there another port I need to enter as well?

Open ports 8767 (TS Server) and 14534 (TS Web Admin) and forward them to the 192.168.xx.xx IP address of the computer om which the server is running...

If you want telnet access to the server, also open and forward port 51234.

Thanks for helping but I am still lost. First of all, I am not sure what forwarding a port is. Is it the same thing as opening a port?

Here is what I am doing...

When I go to 192.168.2.1:88/tools.HTM I click on Initial setup on the left side of the page. That brings up another screen where I am clicking on virtual server. From there it takes me through a series of screens where I just hit a button called enter to go to the next one.

The first screen says it's the virtual server screen. Virtual server settings can be entered here. For detailed information, please see the Belkin Gateway Router user's manual.

Private IP Private Port Type Public Port
1. 192. 168. 2. 3 8767 UDP 8767
2. 192. 168. 2. 3 14534 TCP 14534

Click ENTER to save settings and continue.

ok then the next screen says it's Special Application Settings...

Special Application Settings
Special Application settings can be entered here. For detailed information, please see the Belkin Gateway Router user's manual.

Enter the information you want.
Trigger Port Trigger Type Public Port Public Type Enabled

I didn't put anything on this sceen I just hit went to the next one.

The next sceen says Client Filter Settings...

Client Filtering Settings
The Belkin Gateway Router can be configured to restrict Internet access to computers at specific days and times.

I didn't do anything here either. I just went to the next screen.

The next screen says LAN DHCP Settings
With the Belkin Gateway Router, you can specify an internal IP address. You may also turn the DHCP service on and off. We recommend using DHCP service for the easiest setup of your network. Making changes to this screen will require you to re-configure your networked PC's.

I didn't change anything from the way it is by default. I went to the next screen.

The next screen says NAT Enable/Disable
Network Address Translation (NAT) is used for security by making your internal network invisible to the Internet. We recommend that you leave NAT enabled for security reasons.

I did as suggested and left it enabled and went to the next screen.

Then was set time zone, which I did, and then change password, then remote management, and that was all.

So the only screen I actualy made changes to was the virtual server one, but for all I know that was the wrong one. I hope with this detailed description you can have enough information to help me to get the TSS working so that others can connect. Thank you very much for your help.

No !

"Open a port" you use when you talk about a firewall where a specific port is closed => you open it
But traffic to this port gets not forwarded, the port is simply open.

"forwarding a port" means that in a NAT access, where all connections initiated from the WAN are per default droped, you forward one or more ports to a specific (LAN) IP. This way it is possible to rout a port through such a NAT access.

Instead of going through all this, you might be better of contacting you ISP, let them send you a manual, or even better, let them open the ports you want. Just make sure to have all the details about the ports before you contact them. I know of a few ISP's who charge quite a lot for support....

thanks for your explanation. Now I understand that I have been trying to forward ports. It seems as if I may have been somewhat successful as well. Now when people try to connect they get a socket error instead of server is offline.

which socket error?

The guy who tried to connect just said socket error. Then the next person who tried to connect said that it said server was offline. But it wasn't. So I don't know what the problem is. Maybe if you look at what I did useing the interface you can see what I did wrong or didn't do. Thanks for your help. If you want to try to connect I will leave the server up. 24.225.79.82:8767
