Hello, newbie here needs help

Im new 2 this
got a few question
first of all
why there's is clint and a server?

never mind - i dl the server pack
installed it
register even got on the link on my email that said your nick as actived or somethiong like that

but now that i try 2 log in i cant
i get a "login fail go back to login page" messege
what should i do?

Cause it's a typical server - client application
