One of the best things that Ventrilo has that TS does not is the ability to add amplification to your outgoing voice without having to rely on the OS or sound driver's +20db amplification to the microphone input.

What this allows users to do is to quickly add (or subtract) volume from their own voice above and beyond what their mic is currently set to. Along with that is that it allows those of us who hear feedback through headphones from using this +20db option through our sound card itself.

Basically to test this, put headphones on, then open up your sound properties in WinXP (or whatever sound interface you have). Under Microphone Volume you'll likely see a "+20db" option that you can toggle on and off. While listening to your headphones (and with the microphone input enabled, of course), toggle this on and off.

If you can hear additional noise or static while it is enabled, then you are getting feedback from your mic. The last three soundcards I had had this problem, and all of it is fixed by adding the ability for the application to boost volume only during a talk event (i.e. Push to Talk).

Hmmm,

any "artifical" boost in volume means you introduce noise - so it is not a big supprise that a big boost like the 20 dB boost introduces audible background noise, nothing special there. But increasing the Mic volume from within the TS software is just the same thing (except maybe that it can be adjusted better than either +20 dB or + 0 dB). TeamSpeak already does this of course, it is called voice normalisation, and it tries to get all voices to transmit at a certain volume.
