View Full Version : user bandwidth restrictions
Hi,
Is their a way to restrict the amount of bandwidth that a user can use, for example restricting them to 1k up and down for speech? even if it means restricting everyone on the server that is ok.
The reason is i am running a server on a 512/256 and i want to be able to get more users online before it becomes choppy.
Thanks for any help in advance......
only on the client side. On the server side you can only limit this by setting the codec. Beside, do you wann use a 25.9 kb/sec codec and then limit each user server side to only 8kb/sec ? Doesn't this sounds stupid ?
Have you gone through the FAQ thread which explaines bandwith calculation ?
no, what i was meaning is that i have 25k up bandwidth and i have a clan with say 10 people, I want to be able to restrict them to 2.5k without them selecting unlimited, and over writing me. i have noticed with 8 people the sound will get choppy.

As I wrote, there is no server side setting for limiting the bandwith (apart from the codec).
Each client would have to set the bandwith limitation.
Depending on the codec you're using, and what www application runs in paralle to TS, 10 user behind a 25 Kbyte/sec is most surely very unrealistic. When haviung several connections open, you'll "never" be able to use 100 % of your bandwith capacity with full speed (=> ping will increase => choppyness)
e.g. when my FTP server is using my full upload bandwith, my download rate is significantly lower (rough guess, down to 10 %) but most important, my response time in other www application is increased from nearly unusable to timeouts. Trying to use a time sensitive app. like TS is def. impossible in such a case.
thanks for the help ! i will just have to educate the clan. :o
if you want to host 10 or even more people behind a 512/256 you maybe better look for a rented server. This will allow you to still use your bandwith while talking on TS.
