Hello,

I have been trying to setup a server .I have read so many threads on configuring the router .I have setup the port forwarding to 8767-8767 and also tried 8767-8768. I can get the server to set up but I just cannot connect to it. I know that I am having a problem getting to the Server probably because of my router. I just cannot seem to get it to work I was wondering if anybody else out there has had this problem with this kind of router. I see most routers can set up the kind of port forwarding they want(ftp etc..). I cannot choose. I can just name it and put in ports and ip address. I am wondering what I am missing or is it just thay my router is not up for the task? I have upgraded my router to the newest Firmware and that did not work .Well, please help me out if you can. I would appreciate any input.

Thanks,

Chet

Re the router itself.
1) Add a custom service as described on page 6.2 of the manual ( I think you've done this already. Your router probably does UDP plus TCP protocols without you specifying them)
2) Activate that service as described on page 6.1 of the manual

Connecting from LAN
Attempt to connect to your server using its LAN address and not the WAN (internet) address if your client is on the LAN. If they're both on the same pc, connect using the loopback address 127.0.0.1

Connecting from the WAN.
You don't mention your server pc configuration.
Turn off all software firewalls, antivirus, popup blockers and any other security software. Get a WAN based friend to attempt to connect. If that works turn the applications back on one at a time testing each time from the WAN until you find the culprit. Configure culprit to accept traffic.

Hello,

Thanks for getting back to me so fast. I tried the lan ip and was able to connect to the server. I am not sure what is going on. I am not even getting both ip addresses on the sever anymore. I am just getting the 192.168.0.13 .I was getting my Wan ip earlier. Well, I turned off my Firewall
(Zonealarm-Free Version) I also turned off my Virus program (NOD 32) with no change. I changed my calbes thinking it could of been something simple like that. I just seem to have something blocking me from the internet. I turned off the windows firewall and have really never had it on. When I forward the port I have tried 192.168.0.10 and 192.168.0.13. I also have tried 8767,8768-8767,8767. I am trying to figure out if there is anything else I can turn off ? Or is there anything in my router settings that I am missing. I have looked at so many forums including yours that I am at a loss.I also did just connect directly to the internet without the router and it worked. I am not sure this helps me out or not hehe. I will keep trying. I use cable as internet. I am wondering if I have to configure my ethernet adapter? If you can think of anything I would appreciate it..

Thanks,

Chet

Hi Chet
Don't use both XP and Zonealarm at the same time. Pick one or the other.
Don't worry about only having a single IP address listed by the server, Im behind a router too and only occasionally does it ever display the external IP.
If you can connect to your server via the lan then you know your server and your own network settings are ok.
Are server and client both on the same pc?

If you can attach via the LAN then the problems are most likey due to firewalls or router configuration.
Don't try to connect to your server using your WAN address, some routers can't handle this looping back. Ask a friend on a remote pc to help you out with testing.
Keep the security software turned off until its fixed. If your pcs are behind a router they're safe from incoming attacks.
I'd love to see a screen capture of the services running in the port forwarding section of your router config screen. I want you to prove that you set it up properly. Can you get a copy (alt/ prtscn), clip its size, save as a jpg and add it as an attachment? Use compression on jpg enough to see the screen clearly but to make a small file < 30K

Hello,

Well, I will try what you have said .I cannot find a friend to do it atm lol. I will try to get some if them to connect later. Here is a copy of what is in my Netgear settings:
# Service Name Start Port End Port Server IP Address
1 TS 8767 8767 192.168.0.10

I could not get alt print srn to work .Not sure what is wrong..I will keep trying to get you a picture.

Thanks,
Chet

looks fine as long as IP is correct (you said 192.168.0.13 earlier)

Hello,

Well, my computer is on 13 on the network but the ip of the router is 10.I have tried both but which do I use?

Thanks,

the 13 one, that's where you want the router to transfer traffic to.
If you use 10 the router will keep passing the traffic to itself and get dizzy ;)

I have the same problem with the same router. I configured everything like I was told and I still can't connect to my server. I am able to connect to it through the loopback IP and also using localhost. A few moments ago, I decided to connect my computer directly to the cable modem and see if I could connect. And I did, it worked. But I need the router so it is not a option for me to circumvent it. I portforwarded the the correct ports, I turned off the windows firewall. I still can't connect.

Could you take a screenshot of your port forwarding settings and tell us what the lan ip of your server is.

Here are the requested pictures.

First, here's the portforward screen of my router interface.

And here's a picture of my ip to show I'm not lying.

Hope this helps.

PS: I'm currently in linux because my comp is dual booted and I happened to be in linux at the time of the post, but the lan IP is the same in windows. I can assure that.

mithion - is there an option in your router to "Save & Restart" or something similar? After your ports have been forwarded, some routers require a reboot after saving the new settings.

I haven't seen anything like that. There is an "update settings" button which sorta reinitializes the router (and disconnects me at the same time ). I also tried a more violent approach as to simply unplug the router once the settings have been "updated", wait a minute and then replug it for it to reset. When I do that, I check whether the settings have been saved and they always are. I wondering whether this router doesn't have "special" security features embedded in the firmware which are transparent to the user. Is that possible?

most likely not.
If you have MSN messenger, I have sent you a private message with my email address.
Maybe I can help you out.

Boot to Windows before we start so I can help troubleshoot.
