I have been trying for about a week on and off to set up a server and have a friend connect to it.

I have the server program downloaded

When I start the server It only shows my internal IP (19x.xxx.0.xxx or so)
No external IP is showing. I know my external IP by going to www.whatismyisp.com

I have tried to have my friend connect using my internal IP address but does not connect.

When we open up the server list, the name of the server Shows while Teamspeak Server is running on my computer.... but I can't even log into the server using the TS client.

I know that I must use my external IP but server won't recognize it???

----------------------------------
Separately;
I know that I must port-forward or open the port on my home router to allow port 8767 for use - right?

I have tried reading the guide that came with my router but ... nothing (

I use a D-link model Dl-604 Express EtherNetwork Broadband Router.
I have an AMD Athlon 3200+ with windows XP.

Please help with any tips -- what am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

additional steps

I opened up the port 8767 through Windows XP firewall program

Even tried to log onto server with firewall turned off - still "Error" when trying to log onto my server (

I have also port-forwarded 8767 through my router so it is open now (did online)

Still can't log in though - and still doesnt show external IP in "Your IP's"

I tried repeatedly to connect through the web-server list but to no avail as it tries to connect using my external IP which is still not recognized by the TS server program.

But when I tried to connect through "quick-connect" - my internal IP address worked and allowed me to connect to the server... is this how LAN TS works??? As in if I wanted to connect to the server in another computer here at home I could type in the Internal IP address and connect?

But If I wanted to connect from a friends computer at his house, I would have to type in the external IP address of my computer to connect to my server (wan?)

A lot of ???'s I know - Im not too knowledgeable about these things. Thanks in advance.

quick ?'s

- is it possible to connect to your own server using your external IP ? or can you only access your own server at your own computer using your internal IP?

Your internal LAN ip address is invisible to anyone on the internet if you have a router between your pc and the modem.
If you want to connect to a server on your LAN (from the LAN) then use the LAN ip address eg 192.168.0.2/10.0.0.2 rather than the external internet IP address.
Some routers will, others won't, let you connect to your WAN IP address from inside the LAN.
If you're behind a router, you often will only see the internal LAN address on the menu of the server icon, that's no problem.
When you set up port forwarding, you forward all incoming traffic that wants to connect to port 8767 to your pc LAN ip address on the same port (some routers allow you to select destination ports.)

When setting up my virtual server/port-forwarding ;

Should my "private IP" be my external or internal IP?

-------------------

Since the external IP changes (dynamic, right?) would I have to edit the "private IP" through the port-forwarding everytime I want to allow users to log onto my server?

My friend was able to test my new changes - and no progress (

My server won't even show up in his web server list, but does when I look for it.
I am not really sure where to go from here?

Thanks Label2021.

He helped me with my problem - I had my port forwarding incorrectly set up.

Thanks again.
