View Full Version : Codec settings?
I have read the FAQ and dont understand the how and whys of knowing what to set the Codec to. I rent a voice server along with my game server and was told to experiment. Experiment what??? So I thought I'd try a post here for my questions. I have a 25 member Teamspeak server(rented) with approximately 20 drunks talking at once while playing the game. What would a good Codec be to set at? Right now I have it set speex 12.3 kbit. I have read all the posts but I really am not sure even what it is let alone what to set it at. I cannot test it until our Friday night games. The next question is. Is this setting just for my PC or everyones since I administrate the server? Thanks, Butch

When setting the codex on the teamspeak server its for everyone , people have to use which ever codec is assigned to that channel.
Speex12.3 is still a good setting and you should get a high quality sound, it is kinda an experimenting game, use what you feel like using,.
Maybe some additional info as to what the differant settings mean so as not to be shooting in the dark?

The name of the codec contais the bit rate for that codec. The bigger the bit rate the more network traffic it generates to speak on the channel. If your members are not complaining that their network connections are too slow ot use such high codec then your ok. Most of the load (network traffic) is on the server you have rented. If it has a good connection you can basicly use whatever codec you like. the relation is :
Bigger bit rate = Better sound quality
Bigger bit rate = More network trafic to clients and server
Summary: check from your friends if they have problems (lag, packet loss, pings increase) while using TS, if so try using smaller bit rate codec. The down side is that the sound quality decreases as well.. :/
