View Full Version : Can hardware cause packet loss?

Hello,

I'm having a strange problem with TS packet loss. I've had my cable connection serviced, and run multiple line checks for packet loss. The problem doesn't appear to be in the connection itself. It only shows up in my TS connection info. The original problem was that when I joined TS, I'd start with 0% PL, then PL slowly increased up to 20-30%.

After reading TS forums, I started checking my hardware. So far, I have:

Replaced Modem (Toshiba PCX2200)
Replaced NIC (D-Link 32 bit 10/100/100)
Replaced all cables including cat5
Replaced my sound card
Moved NIC to another slot on MB.

All of this seems to have resulted in a new situation. Now when I join a channel, I usually see 0% PL for awhile longer. If I don't transmit, PL slowly climbs up to 10-12%, but when I begin to speak, PL decreases down to 2-6%.

I'm wondering if anyone has ever heard of such a thing. Some people say it could it be my motherboard? Processor? I run an AMD XP2100, 1 gig matched RAM and NVIDAfx5200. The problem described is with only TS running. When I run my game (MS FS2004) PL gets worse. I've used the same system for a year before this began.

I'm at my wits end. If anyone can offer advise I would so greatly appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Greg

Sounds like an issue with several hundret (thousand) possible reasons. The HW can be the source of PL, but bad drivers / firmware are probably more realistic. I guess the only thing you can do is to update all drivers and then start replacing the HW step by step to get the source.

I assume you're having this problem not only on one specific server ?

Things you could also try (if you have the chance to do so):
- test your PC on a friends www connection (to filter out the access device and ISP)
- If you have a Linux running in parallel, does it happen there as well (ideal for filtering if it's a driver or HW problem)

Thank you for the reply.

I just went a computer store near my house. They also use Central Florida Road Runner on their machines, and they let me hook my computer up to their connection. TeamSpeak packet loss was identical to my connection at home. It held 0% for a few minutes then started climbing. Then they let me download TeamSpeak onto one of their higher-end machines. I connected to the TS server and the same thing happened.

This is the third Central Florida Road Runner connection (on four different machines) that has produced various levels of packet loss while connected to TS. I think I'm ready to rule my machine out as the source of the problem.

The real problem now is getting anyone at Road Runner to even address the problem. What do you guys think I should tell them? They offer AOL and Earthlink through the same provider (BrightHouse Networks) Would changing my service be any different since the same people own it?

i woud say with reading your post it is all do to your isp , not hardware , and i dought if same company owns the other that would change most likely they just change your modem firmware to allow you a better download / upload speed and ts dont use a lot of bandwith as a client , so i dont see how that solves your packet loss ... do you get packet loss on all servers you join or just a few that you join ????

M&M's

Thanks for the input. The problems happens regardless of the server I connect to. Yesterday the admin for our TeamSpeak server sent me this:

"Called Brighthouse ... had them run a diagnostic between their backbone and us and we're clean 0% loss, however between them and you on the same network they had 5% packet loss. I'll email you with the details, trouble ticket number, and who to call."

I think we're getting somewhere, finally!

Thanks Again, I'll let you know how they treat this.

I too am experiencing severe packet loss specific to TS, and no other program. AND I also have road runner... Is that a common thread for all of us who have packet loss?

As it seems to be an ISP problem, I don't think the packet loss is a TS only issue. Other applications might have the same problems, but as TS is a voicecom you recognize the packet loss more than in other applications.

The other programs I'm speaking of are Roger Wilco, Ventrillo, Whatever Steam and BF2 use. TS is the only program that I have packet loss with... Respectfully, I think it may be a combination of the two. Perhaps an incompatibility problem... I just wish there was someone with the technical know how, patience, work-ethic and ability to pursue this issue. I'm sure that there is a consistent problem as I've seen many posts complaining of this same issue. It may be worth time effort to provide more detailed support for this particular problem. Thanks again...

So I guess there is not a chance of this happening?

well teamspeak can not do anything about what goes on at your isp , as far as hardware goes all you can do is test diferant / newer drivers or new cards , but with a packet loss it is most likely the isp

but network card drivers , motherboard drivers or even updating moden and router fireware could only help if on your end
