It would be great if a joystick button could be used for Push to Talk activation.

As in true DirectInput support? I feel duty-bound to agree... In fact, if I can take your idea and run with it for a bit, I'd really like it if it were possible to set two PTT "triggers" - a primary and a secondary.
Currently, I have to use the software for both my mouse and my joystick to map one button on each to the keyboard PTT key, so that I can use my mouse when acting as an ATC and during preflight as a pilot and my joystick when flying [online Flight Sim]. True DirectInput support to remove the necessity for key mapping altogether, and two PTT "triggers" so that 2 input devices can be used.
i vote for that mapping 2 ptt buttons is what i need mydelf i stared to play bfv and my ptt is my center mouse /wheel botton witch can't be mapped to my joystick when flying , so i had to change my maps to the "/" off the center mouse to the left side mouse #6 button

I've been able to make many sticks do this by having them simply pump out the desired keystroke when the button is pushed. Works for Saitek and Thrustmaster, and I think Logitech.

Works with CH too, but maybe not with some Cheapo-Sticks that are produced and assembled in some backyard in Asia.
i got the logitech extreme 3d pro and it works for me
