Alright guys,
I am sure this is something easy, but I gotta admit I am stumped. I am a computer technician so I didn’t think this would be a problem but I was wrong. Imma try and be as detailed as I can here.
I am trying to set up a TS server for just voice chatting nothing fancy. So heres what im working with….
2 computer network using a linksys NLR41 router…
TS server
Gateway 866MHZ
128MB RAM
Realtek 8139C NIC
Intergrated everything else
Windows XP Professional SP1
Computer 2….
AMD Athlon XP 2800+
768MB RAM
Windows XP Professional SP1
Now…. I can connect to the server fine from computer 2. But no onw outside of my network can connect. So I read a few guides I found and opened the ports that I needed. (8767) Still nothing.
Then I Updated the firmware on the router, reset it to factory defaults and installed port magic to manage my ports in case I was missing something. No help. Although, when I installed it, a second IP came up in the server IP menu. I tried giving people this address and port number…nothing. It was a weird address too…66.242.XXX.XX
The reason it was weird is because I live in a real small town and for some reason I get a class 3 address sent to my modem. 192.168.X.X. I know that’s odd that They send that, but trust me, I had to change the IP of my router when I first got it because they were conflicting I have tried everything I know. I need some help here guys. Thanx
No firewalls

Dude, Your router ip should be 192.168.1.1, your ip could be 192.168.1.1XX,
this is you internal IP, not your mask, make sure you redirect everything properly and turn off any security programs such as zone alarm, you also have to be connected to the net to do this. Then make sure you get your external IP correct, which you can get from your router admin screen.
Make sure all the numbers are correct and your server is setup properly and then try it,
If it doesnt work then reinstall the server
if you reset to factory defalts you erased your port fowarding check my sig for router help at 2 diferant sites

My router IP is 192.168.10.10
I had to change it because the adress my ISP was sending was 192.168.1.1 Crazy i know.
Now when I installed port magic, the menu in the server that shows your IPs gave me a 66.242.x.x so i gave people this number to try to longin and it doesnt work they cant do it. Also, I dont have any firewalls or anything like that enabled. Any other ideas?

Port magic handles my port forwarding for me, thats not an issue. What next?
PS, my buddy had to use port magic too, but its not working for me.

192.168.1.1 <-- is the router
66.242.x.x <--- real world ip
if server and client are on the same pc use 127.0.0.1 <-- this is a loopback ip does not leave your pc or hit your router so the 127 ip will allow you to connect to your server from your pc only , hand out your real world ip so players outside your home can connect . port fowarding still needs to be set up

I appriciate the help, I really do. But I have already explained that when I hand out my real world IP, no one can connect. Port magic automatically handles my port forwarding, thats not an issue. It shows that 8767 is open (mapped)
Still, no one can connect.
do you also have a firewall running ?

Hello,
I was having trouble with people connecting to my server. So I took the router out and hooked it directly to my modem. I love in a real small town and we get class 3 adressed from out ISP. 192.168.1.3
but if I go to a site that locates my IP, it gives me a 66.242.xx.xx number, why is that? isnt my wan supossed to come directly from the ISP?
go to www.whatismyip.com to get your real world ip
i would try setting up port fowarding with out port magic and test see my sig for 2 site for help if needed

why would my modem give me a different IP than a "real world IP"?

That sounds like your ISP gives you LAN IP addresses. The IP address that whatismyip.com or other similar sites give you is the IP address from where the http request was received from which usually is your WAN IP address, however some ISPs force transparent http proxies upon you so you will not see your WAN IP address, but the IP address of the proxy server that forwarded your request.
Setups like this are very problematic, especially if you need to run a program that has to listen to incoming connections (which is impossible in that case).
Pls STOP making several threads for ONE question !

Still with no router no firewall and using the real world IP from that site, I get nothing. Is there any way I can get around all this crap my ISP is doing? is there a setting I can ask them to change?
Also, like i said its a small town and apparently not done very well, cause I cxan long in and change whatever settings I want on the modem. They left the password very easy to figure out. I Hope this helps.
You have 2 addresses for your Router. 1 is the LAN address, this is usually 192.168.1.1 or 0.1, depends on the manufacturer.
the other is the WAN address. This is the IP your ISP gives you. It may be the same or it may change. Depending if you have a static IP or a Dynamic IP. you need to phone your ISP and ask them what your IP address is. If you have more than one IP you need to find out which is the router IP. (you probably don't unless you have some kind of business package). The WAN address is what others enter from other computers on the network.
Conclusion. Phone your ISP and find out your IP address. It may say the IP address in the Router. But seriously the IP you have said cannot be your WAN IP address. Unless your ISP is an Ethernet cable running to your house. :D
@iamgud
pls read what Brain stated above. I personally don't know any ISP which allocated IP's out of the personal IP range to customers, but it could be the case here. So I'd contact the ISP anyway to find out about this behaviour.
If that is not the case and you do get a "valid" WAN IP, wisem2540 should check his port forwarding rules again and maybe we do a connection test from here.

Ok well I have the same prob as in this topic. I read all your post but non of it seemed to help. I did the open port for 8767 and it is set to my computers IP and I gave out my IP that I got from that site but my friend cannot connect. Then I tried taking my computer off the LAN and connecting right to the modem and it had a diffrent IP and I gave that to my friend while still on the modem and he connected fine so i know it isnt my computer blocking it. So now I ahve no idea what it is that is wrong.
opening a port and seting port fowarding are two diferant things
