Is there a way to use the linux client on a computer that does not have a soundcard to simply record what's happening in a channel?

Nope. Unless you find some kernel driver that emulates a soundcard.

alsa provides a facility to run even if u have no soundcard, maybe you could record the output to a file ? -- might be summin useful on sourceforge
