View Full Version : Question about server resources needed
Hi everyone, i tried the client version for windows of TS2 and i found it the best voice program ever tried:)
So i decided to put on a server version, on a linux server, to make it available for my friends when playing.
But i would know some info about the server version, i count them;) (i couldn't find anything about it anywhere in the forum, and sorry if this is the wrong forum)
1) How many user can i have connected in the same moment?
2) Does it works on freebsd?
3) How many bytes for second for user does it take?
4) Which is its CPU usage?
I need this informations because ts2 should go on an already occupied server, so i don't want to do a mass after installing it:)
Thanks in advance for any answer:)
>1) How many user can i have connected in the same moment?
There is no limit I know of.
> 2) Does it works on freebsd?
No idea.
> 3) How many bytes for second for user does it take?
Depends :)
To every user somebody is talking, the server has to download 1 stream from the User (16.4 KBit/sec with GSM), and has to upload ($Usersinchannel - 1) * codecusage.
Worst case for 20 users:
U have 20 Users in one channel, all talking at once with GSM 16,4 KBit/sec:
Download Bandwidth needed: 20 * 16.4 KBit/sec = 41 KByte/sec
Upload Bandwidth needed: 20 [users] * 19 [streams] * 16.4 KBit/sec = 0.76 MByte/sec.
So, you'd want a 10 MBit connection line to handle it.
4) Which is its CPU usage?
Again, I dunno, but should be very low (i expect the server to run on 100 MHz easily), but I have not done any benchmarks on it.

1) How many user can i have connected in the same moment?
The theoretical limit is 2 Billion (a 31 bit number)
2) Does it works on freebsd?
Im pretty sure it will work on freebsd when you use linux emulation.
3) How many bytes for second for user does it take?
Just multiply the codec kbit usage (see in the client) with the number of users in the channel. (say 5.1 kbit in a 10 user channel, 1 person speaks is 5.1 * 10 * 1 = 51 kbit)
The highest codec is 16.4 kbit
4) Which is its CPU usage?
Very low - negligable

What are the memory requirements?
You say the cpu usage is low - will it run on a pentium 100 MHz? - what is the minumum requirement?

I have had aTs server running with as little as 128 with 58 people on it and running my web server and smtp server, back in the days....now i am runnig it with quad pent 3 system and 4 gigs reg. ram and let me tell you i have had a whoool lot of people on it i mean i had a whole gathering from east to west coast on at one time ..ie 275 poeple on at one time in several different rooms ...about 30 and not even a flicker on the server or team speak
if that helps you i am on linux, and i would assume it would be 1 meg per user...that seems to be the norm i see on my servers
