View Full Version : really odd router problem
ok here are the spacifics:
1. 95% of the users can connect without a problem.
2. 3 users have issues that develop over time, at which point I have to reset the router to get it to stop.
3. the 3 users are in different parts of the country.
4. 1 of the users is not using a router of any kind, running windows 2000. another is running windows 98 behind a router on cable, and another is running windows xp behind a router on dsl.
5. the 98 user behind a router, is not able to connect while his brother on the SAME router as he is, is able to connect without a problem.
the exact problem: the users in question begin to receve "connection timed out" errors when trying to connect. its always the same users. It is not IP based, as is made evident by #5. The error will occasionally remedy it self hours or days later, but reseting my router always fixes it.
The router I'm running is a linksys BEFSR41. ver 3.1

well, just a guess:

I only have one WAN ip address though santa. Could this still be my problem? I will try making that change, what is the proper syntax for that line? when I edit it all i'm getting is error messages.
I tried
BoundToIp1=111.111.110.001
(this is not the real ip address, i'd rather not post the server adress in a forum :P )
My DMZ is disabled, should it be enabled?

no just makin sure it wasent b/c if u had the port forward then u open the DMZ some times the TS wont work like planed.
did you check the "no reply" FAQ thread concerning timeout ?
I did, sorry that I did not post that I have already read the faq's in my post, I know that its requested. I spaced it.
Nothing in the faq addressed all the problems I had, I didn't think the above solution would apply as I only have 1 WAN ip address, but perhaps I misunderstood it. The server computer does have a LAN ip and a WAN ip in the right click dialogue of the tray icon. I tried puting the wan ip as suggested in the faq, and the responce above but then no one can connect to it.
...so the users having problems to conect do not get a timeout but just a simple no reply ?
Then I assume that your conection is not very stable (or your router firmware / HW is buggy), or some users do not have a stable conenction to your server ?
The problem we are having is as said above
the users in question begin to receve "connection timed out" errors when trying to connect
specific users encounter time out errors, and once they start they persist until I restart my router. When one of these users encounters the problem, so do the others on the short list of trobubled users. (almost always)
Some of these users are in different states than I, and living in the same house as someone who never has a problem. (different computers, same house)
One of the users lives with 4 other people. None of the other 4 computers ever have issues. When he has issues, I have to reset the router. I thought perhaps it was on his end, but there are 6 out of 80 users that have issues. None of them have even similar setups. (some use routers, some switches, some direct internet connections, different OS, diferent ISPs, some cable, some dsl)
My connection is very stable. And over T1 speeds. none of the other 74ish users EVER have problems. The 6 though, they do at least every other day.
then I'd say it might be that there is a problem between those 6 users and your server.
- have this users testes to resed their access device after they get a timeout / restarted their TS client / restarted their PC ?
- Do this users get increasing packet loss over time / high ping ?
yes they have. they have gone as far as turning *everything* off on their end and turning it back on, still no luck until I reset my router.
