Hello all.
im currentry trying to change from ventrilo (due 2 the 8 slot cap) to teamspeak but i have som soundquality problems

On ventrilo om using the following settings
VoiceCodec = 0 (GSM 6.10)
VoiceFormat = 2 (22 KHz, 16 bit) - Bytes/Sec 4420

I've tried every codec setting on teamspeak and they all sound (sorry but i thinks its true) crap.

Am i doing something wrong?

They setup is the default one, i create new channels with every codec and try them but we all sound like where speaking through a vacuumcleaner hose, or like a sewer pipe. u have to really concentrate on what they are saying in order to hear them. in ventrilo it sounds like a normal phonecall..

I know that this has been asked before but i've not seen any good answers.

Speex 25.9Kbit should sound ok? but it doesn't
I'm running ventrilo and teamspeak on the same server (not at the same time though) so there's no difference in hardware.

I want to start using teamspeak, it's a fantastic software so please help me, any advice will do..

I have tried the exact same thing with a friend. I set up a teamspeak and vent server side by side, both running the best codecs. Unlike you though, we both concluded that teamspeak sound actually sounded BETTER than vent. The only thing I can think of is that the type of MIC you use could be a major factor, just a theory though.

Have you tried the GSM codecs for TS?

Do NOT use the Speex 25,9 Kbit codec.

That codec combined with teamspeak has a fault, that enables a user to send corrupted packages to the server, causing all sound to loop.

There's no securityrisk in this, at all, but it's pretty annoying during a game, so save yourself the troubles :)

I use the Speex 19,5 on the server, I'm hosting, and I'm generally happy with is. Sound quality isn't the best, but it's quick, even with many people on it, and there is no trouble understanding each other :)

If you want to, you can read the post, the user appointed the bug in here (http://forum.goteamspeak.com/showthread.php?t=27031), and also hear the effects, in the two wave files, he posted.

As i said in the post, i've tried every codec and they all sound the same to me, i cant hear any difference, thats why i think i might be doing something wrong..

did you tested the codecs with the locale loopback mode ? There you will CLEARY hear a HUGE difference between the codecs.
If now on the server the codecs sound bad, I assume a connection problem, High ping, high packet loss,....

local loopback was news to me, how do i implement that?
I've tried testing on my local LAN so there should not be high ping, latency and such.

i've just installed the server, no tweaks, no different setting then the default.
then i connect to the server,
after that i make a new channel and choose another codec. then we all jump to that channel and try talking.. is there another way perhaps?

The interface is ilittle overwhelming 4 me right now(compared to ventrilo) so i might be doing this the wrong way..

I've noticed a significant difference in sound quality as well. And this is running on a server with minimal processes inside of a datacenter, so I know that ping/packet loss is not an issue. If anyone knows of a way to either tweak the server, or download a different codec that will improve quality, that would be wonderful.

the client has a built in local loopback test where oyu can choose, all sound is then played back to you => a good way to test the codecs how they should perform when used on a server. If there is a difference between the quality, it is almost only connection based (packet loss / high ping,...).

A server in a datacenter does not autom. means no ping,... problems. It should however offer a much more stabel / reliable connection.

@vladimir
You can't dl new codecs and integrate them in TS. Anyway, the 25.9 (despite of the above bug) I uses often offers for my ears a quite good quality.
