TS hogging CPU

I have a friend whose TS is using up to 40% of the CPU. He runs an Athlon and onboard AC'97 sound. He's tried updating the AC drivers with the latest on offer from Realtek. He's also tried re-installing TS. Still TS is using loads of CPU.
Has anyone had these symptoms before or has any suggestions that may help us to sort his issue?

We've tried a new sound card now and TS is still hogging the CPU, taking up to 40% of the CPU when it's running!
He has a similar system to me and I've never seen TS take more than 5%.
