View Full Version : D-Link Router, read everything, no one can get in my TS Server.

Hey, I have read and done every single thing I could to get others to be able to use my Team Speak server, but NO ONE can get in. I can only get in with my private LAN IP Address. I can not get in with my WAN IP Address, neither can anyone else. I use a D-Link Router, and I have read everything there is to read, and I STILL can't get this thing to work. I have been to my router page on the internet when I type in my private IP Address, and I have gone to Virtual Server, and Firewall, and all of that stuff, and still, nothing. What do I do? THIS IS DRIVING ME INSANE! :/

I know it's really hard to see, since it's stickied as the FIRST THREAD IN THIS FORUM, but there's a nifty thread on "How to use TS behind Routers" (http://forum.goteamspeak.com/showthread.php?t=15092).
Maybe, just MAYBE you'd want to start by reading there.
Or, maybe you'd use the search function to find how others have answered this question any of the hundreds of times its asked.
Maybe you'd do a google search and find www.portforward.com.
But, I'm sure since you've "read and done every single thing I could to get others to be able to use my Team Speak server" - that this is all old news to you.
I suggest PEBKAC.

You've read the forum rules?
Because one of the first things listed in there is to help us help you, by posting a DETAILED LIST of what you have or haven't done.
Of course, you already know that since you've "read and done everything".
Makes me wonder why you're not following those rules. Doesn't surprise me you're not getting a lot of answers though.
We're not psychics. You want help? Help us help you.
Learn to write a post that gives us the information we need (as listed in the rules). Learn to punctuate so its easy for us to read. Turn down the attitude so that we WANT to help you.
Or, alternately, keep posting that you already "did everything" then wonder why you get no help.

ok here...I know this: I type in my LAN IP Address in my web browser (Internet Exploer) and a window pops up and I have to type in admin for the username and admin for the password. I do that, and in my web browser pops open a little screen that looks like this:http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DI-524/TeamSpeak.htm basicly that is what pops up. (By the way, i have followed all of those rules, and nothing happened) I have gone to Virtual Server, and tried to type in a lot of things, but nothing ever happened, and I have gone to firewall, and I don't know what to type in there. Can you help me out now?

*rolls up sleeves*
I guess I'll take a stab, though you're still less than clear on what is/isn't working and what you have/heaven't tried - so, there's going to be lots of questions here. The more clearly you answer them, the sooner I can probably help you.
First and foremost - to save yourself a lot of hassle, is renting a server an option for you? There's a bunch of authorized hosters out there and they're fairly inexpensive (http://sales.tritoncia.com/hosters.php) - just tell them how many slots you need open, and you can be up an running in minutes.
Assuming that for any number of reasons you can't or don't want to pay for a server, let's get some basic information here.
I assume that what you're telling me is that you have an always-on connection (Cable, DSL, etc) you have a rotuer, and you have one (or more) computers on your network - one of which is running the TeamSpeak Server software (in either Windows or Linux - these are the kinds of details the Forum Rules request, but since you supplied none of them, I'll assume you're on Windows)
I'll assume you also have THE most common problem with running a server. The one that takes up every 4th thread here, as well as most of the FAQ - you can connect to your server internally, but nobody on the Internet can connect.
Sure, I'm assuming a lot, and while I'm at it, I'll assume assume you're in your teens, think proper grammar doesn't matter, and that everyone here needs to hold your hand as much as possible kplzthnks.
Step 1)
Know your EXTERNAL ip address. You're probably connecting to your server at an address much like 192.168.0.100 - or if you're really fancy "localhost" or 127.0.0.1 - you didn't tell me what address you're using, so there's more assumption at work here. Deal with it.
You need to get your friends to connect to your EXTERNAL address - the address the rest of the world sees. Find that address by going to www.whatismyip.com - it'll give you a number - give that number to your friends, be aware that this number MAY change from time to time based on the policies of your ISP. Them's the breaks. If it does change and you don't want it to - talk to them about it. They'll probably charge you $10 a month for a "static" address.
Friends still can't connect? Read on.
Step 2)
Make sure your firewall is configured correctly. You've already done that, I know, well, we're gonna do it again, sparky.
For this you need to know your INTERNAL address - again, I'm assuming 192.168.0.100 (localhost and 127.0.0.1 won't work for this step - so forget you ever heard them).
You need to login to your router (192.168.0.1 probably) enter the name and password (should be in your manual) and look for an option like "Port Forwarding" or "Virtual Server". www.portforward.com can help out here, if you know the make and model of your router.
When you find the right option, you'll want to create a rule that will open port 8767 and forward it to the Internal IP address of the computer running the Server. This, essentially, opens a "door" from the Internet to your computer. If this rule isn't configured correctly, it's the equivalent of those cartoons you see where Bugs Bunny opens a door to find a brick wall waiting there.
You don't want your friends to hit a brick wall do you?
Step 3
This one isn't always needed, but is becomming fairly common in today's world.
Now that we've told your friends where to find the door (Step 1 - External IP Address) and made sure the door opens properly (Step 2 - Port Forwarding) we have to make sure that the doorman (your computer firewall) isn't turning people away with a sneer.
See, that friendly computer firewall you have has one real task - make sure that anything that wants into your computer stays out.
Now we're changing the rules, we want your friends to come through the door you've opened, and get into your computer. So, you'll need to go into your firewall software and make an exception for TeamSpeak. Specifically, you'll need to tell your computer to ALLOW a connection INBOUND (or INCOMING or simple IN) on port 8767.
To stretch my "door" analogy to the extreme - this is like when you're in a hotel with two adjoining rooms. Each room has their own door that lock the other room out. Sure you might open the door on YOUR side, but the peopl ein the other room have to open their door as well or ain't nobody passing between rooms.
Well, now that the "door" on your router is open - your computer needs it "door" open as well.
Do **NOT** (let me repeat that - **NOT**) just turn off your firewall, unless its just to test if your friends can connect with it off, and then you turn it right back on again. Turning off your firewall means your computer could accept a connection from anyone, anywhere, on any port, and that's how Very Bad Things happen.
No, I don't know exactly how to make an exception rule in YOUR firewall software. There's at least 5 well-known brands of such software, and countless other lesser-known brands, all with just slightly different clicks and buttons to make an exception. Find out what firewall you're using - the go to THEIR website and read the manual for your software.
Step 4
When that's all done, report back what did/didn't work, and where you ran into trouble.
Be specific about the problems you have, be polite. Be patient - try reading other threads to see if someone else had your problem, maybe they'll give you an answer you haven't tried. That's what makes search such a great tool.
Bonjour.

OK Listen, I'm really really sorry, I am doing the very best I can in being clear and everything. No I seriously can not buy a server, because I have so much I have to pay for, monthly for some things, and I'm only 13 years old so I dont have THAT much money...
Yes, I am on Windows. I don't even really know what Linux is, so...
Exactly, I can connect to my server with my LAN IP Address, but no on else can get in with my WAN address, and of course they wont be able to get in with my LAN.
Yup, im in my teens and if your shure u dont want mee 2 use propper grmmer thenn i wont...
Ummm, I don't know if this is safe to do this, but my LAN IP Address is 192.168.0.102...(:8767) Yes, I already know what my WAN is (External) which is 70.35.45.7 thanks...
Ok, I have already been in my router settings place, and I will go again. I have tried out Virtual Server, and done everything they have told me, so I'm guessing I should now go to Firewall.
Just to tell you, if I go to Virtual Server, the options are: Enabled or Disabled, Name, Private IP Protocol Type, Private Port, Public Port, Schedule (Always, or From time)...
For Firewall (settings): Enabled, Disabled, Name, Action (Allow, Deny), Source (WAN or LAN) IP Range Start IP Range End, Destination (LAN or WAN) IP Range Start IP Range End Protocol Port Range, Schedule (Always or From time)
How does this help? o.O

Didn't forget, just don't check things over the weekend, and yesterday was a bear for me so I didn't really have time to give away here.
Alright, if you're sure your router configuration is correct and it sounds like you think it is (and portforward.com makes that pretty much as simple as it can be) then it sounds like your software firewall (provided by McAfee, Norton, TrendMicro, ZoneAlarm, or even just simply Windows Firewall - to name but a few options) is stopping the inbound connection.
The only way to test this would be to find the options for that software (nope, I probably don't know how to check what you're using since there's so many options) and to **TEMPORARILY** disable your software firewall (that DOES NOT mean the firewall on the D-Link - again do NOT fiddle with the D-Link router at this time).
Find that software, disable the firewall (and remember how/where you did that so you can turn it back on after the test) - then have a friend connect to you.
If they get in, we know the software firewall is the issue, and you'll need to read the manual (usually on their website) to find out how to make an exception for incoming traffic on port 8767.
If disabling the SOFTWARE firewall doesn't work, then your router is still misconfigured, or something else is wrong, and unfortunately, we start to reach the point where someone would have to know a LOT about your network to help you (IE - do you have more than one router perhaps? What exact firewall software are you using? What's the firmware version on your router(s)? Does your ISP have some crazy rule limiting inbound ports to your connection? etc etc etc).
Good luck.

OK I stopped my Firewall, and took it down, and my friends still could not get in.
No, I only have one router.
I'm sorry, but I don't know what Firewall program I'm using, and it doesnt say. :P
I don't understand your last question, I'm really sorry! :PPP

Because you don't know what you are/aren't running, the fact of the matter is simply going to be that you don't have the knowledge required to run a TeamSpeak server.
I'm afraid I can't help you any further.

You can't give the information I need to help you. As you said, you'll have to "figure it out" - that precludes someone telling you what to do.
Good luck.

Grrrrrrrrr...
Please post all questions in one topic. This forum have pinned topic for problems like Your one.
Open Your eyes.
well dont worry... you are not the only one that suffered from this... i have several routers i tried.... both gaming and standard.... i even have a linksys that does the same thing your is... so what i did... is bought another inexpensive network card.... and plugged that into my computer... i have four more computers here that need internet access...
so i plug my internet connection into the pre-existing nic card.... then took a cat5 and plugged that into the wan port on my router and then into that new nic card on my computer... then all i did was enabled internet sharing on network card1.... i played with the router settings a bit but finally got it to work... so now i i have a direct connection with the internet meanwhile the other computers go through the router and then through my computer to the internet... sounds kinda complicated but it isn't... took me five mins to do it... and now i have no connection issues... maybe try doing something like this... i know this is an old post but this may help others.... i even forwarded ports... set dmz and everything.... tried everything... and everything didn't work until i did this latest config.... no problems... the other computers internet speed is still excellent....
OMG
I didn't read it all ... sry ... did you post some answers ??
you know what ??
