Did you use DirectSound or WAV for in/out-put ?!

I switched the setup to wav and had lot of problems. The ingame-sound stopped completely for several seconds, then it was back on, after some seconds sound failed again .. strange.

or have u tried both ?

I have 8.1 installed and running fine.

Is there a 9 ?
