speech menu

when i'm on ts or skype or whatever my mic doesn't seem to work when i go to speach and configure my microfoon he works and when i keep the speach menu open it keeps working on TS etc. as soon as i close the speech menu again it quits working...
I got a headset from the brand GENIUS. not known and got it free while i bought a special edition game.
