Question on an echo problem I am having when playing with a specific person. He is using onboard Realtek audio. I have X-fi. I get an echo of my voice when he speaks right after me, or at the same time. I can also hear some slight game sounds from his end when he talks too.

Could this be an issue with his headphones, onboard audio, or has anyone noticed this before and done something to prevent it?

He has all "recording" volume sliders minimized, microphone selected, microphone playback muted.

If he just needs to cough up a few bucks to put a sound card in his PC, if that is known to fix the issue, then I can just convince him to do that, but he's kinda short on cash lately, holidays and all, and kid in college.

Thanks for any tips!

Start with updating drivers - for both of you.

After that, run the Windows Voice Wizard (availavle from the Sound option in the Control Panel - on the Voice tab in WinXP).

This can help balance voice out, and can stop a system from replaying what is heard back out the mic port.

If that doesn't solve it, you can go into the recording settings and make sure the "what you hear" option is NOT selected (uncheck the box).

I'm guessing one of those is to blame.

The final option that comes to mind, however, is that he may simply have his microphone to close to his speakers (not an issue if he's using a headset).
