after one year of development speex has reached the 1.0 milestone.
Speex is a CELP-based free and open audio compression codec specifically tuned to compress human speech at bitrates ranging from 2 to 44 kbps. The bitstream and API are now officially frozen.
Here’s a feature list for Speex 1.0:
* Narrowband (8 kHz), wideband (16 kHz), and ultra-wideband (32 kHz) compression in the same bitstream
* Intensity stereo encoding
* Packet loss concealment
* Variable bitrate operation (VBR)
* Voice Activity Detection (VAD)
* Discontinuous Transmission (DTX)

time to implement it in teamspeak ;)
