after one year of development speex has reached the 1.0 milestone.

Speex is a CELP-based free and open audio compression codec specifically tuned to compress human speech at bitrates ranging from 2 to 44 kbps. The bitstream and API are now officially frozen.

Here’s a feature list for Speex 1.0:

* Narrowband (8 kHz), wideband (16 kHz), and ultra-wideband (32 kHz) compression in the same bitstream
* Intensity stereo encoding
* Packet loss concealment
* Variable bitrate operation (VBR)
* Voice Activity Detection (VAD)
* Discontinuous Transmission (DTX)

time to implement it in teamspeak ;)

impressive quality with 16kHz 17kbps. And it offers a wide range of sample rates. I hope it will be integrated soon.

hum, the developers here don't seem too enthousiatic :)

Don't know... you should actually be afraid.. if you don't know whether you are laughing out loud or not.
See a doctor :)

good, I just hope that we'll have a dedicated panel to configure a maximum of options for this codec, or at least access to the FULL range of bit rates.

As Niels told me: VBR is not suited for TeamSpeak. So the range of cbr **could** be used.

fine!

i'm realy hoping.. that speex will be added to TS

the sound quality @ 16khz, 8kbit...
is more than enough

and why cant TS use vbr??

i have encoded a test file from www.speex.org (16khz 16bit wave, 6sec's long)

using this setup:
Encoding Complexity: 1 (lower = less cpu usage)
No. of Frames per Ogg Packet: 1
Encoding Quality: 1-5

and for the cbr files i used the option:
Enable Voice Activity Detection

what do you think of it?

i would use this
cbr-01.spx : Low Quality 5,43 KB (5.564 bytes) = 0.9KB/s
vbr-02.spx : High Quality 8,31 KB (8.516 bytes) = 1.3KB/s

celp 5.1 = 0.64KB/s
celp 6.3 = 0.79KB/s
gsm 14.8 =1.85KB/s
gsm 16.4 = 2.05KB/s
celp windows 5.2 = 0.65KB/s
