View Full Version : XFi Xtreme Audio Again - Friends Echoing
I have scoured the forum, if someone knows the link to a thread that contains this problem, please let me know.
I have Windows XP Professional, Dx 9c and an XFi Xtreme Audio Sound Card.
My old Sound blaster live did not have this problem and works fine but its 9 years old. I wanted to upgrade
I have installed drivers, downloaded the latest driver from Creative Labs. dated 11/2008 installed those. Have DX 9.0C.
My onboard sound chip is disabled in my BIOS and does not appear in Hardware/Device Manager
No matter where I place the voice activation settings, if the mic is on Voice activation (moved closer to shout). My friends reverberate (echoing horribly). If it is on Push to Talk it does not echo.
In the Windows Audio console, I am in properties:
First, have tried unchecking the Microphone box in Playback options. have tried muting it. I did this
I have tried checking ONLY Microphone in Recording. I also had prior S/PDIF-in, and Line-in checked off with Microphone. I unchecked ALL but the microphone in recording. I have the volume medium low.
This happens on Ventrillo too (I really prefer Team Speak to Vent).
Does anyone know what is up with this particular card? It has to be in settings some place. OTHER people use the card.
This happens on TWO different computers I own with the same card.
If i have not described this properly, let me know. Or if anyone has questions of me to help diagnose the problem, it would be welcome.
I am an advanced user so i can pretty much find what anyone would need to know.
OH and i am using a headset. there just seems to be cross talk on this card.
The old SBLive runs Team speak like a champ. :)
Thanks!
These are in no particular order. Just some ideas.
Sometimes, new isn't always better. Try older sound drivers if you can find any.
Also, take note of the following.

Most sound cards now days come with their very own control panel. Check there for features that don't show up on your windows audio properties.
In TS > settings > options, you can switch from wave to direct or vice versa and instead of using 'primary sound driver', be more specific and pick 'extreme audio sound card'
Hi,
And thanks for responding. I really do appreciate you trying to help. Glad you brought those points up and asked those questions. Sometimes I forget to put all the troubleshooting steps I have done in the original post.
I completely agree. Newer is not always better.
It seems to me other people use this card and have no problem. I have tried both the oldest and the newest drivers for this card.
I have checked off all boxes in recording in the Audio Options/Windows Mixer control panel. Tried it. Same result of my friends not being able to speak without getting unbearable reverberation on THEIR end. I can hear it if their microphone is open/hot.
Then per a suggestion in a previous thread in this forum, I checked off ONLY microphone in recording. Made sure Playback mike was muted or disabled. This did no good either.
My friend said the card sounded like it had some wires crossed internally.
I had also checked the sound settings in Settings/Options Team speak and ensured it was set to use the SB XFi Card.
A card like this should be Direct X compatible. I have tried both wave and Direct X in the Team speak Options. It passes all the tests for sound when i bring up Direct X Diagnostic Tool. (from the Start button, choosing Run, typing and running DXDIAG). It passes all Direct X sound tests when I bring up the card on the Sound Tab.
I have written to Creative (as the card is new on the one pc) and explained that my 9 year old Sound Blaster Live does not have this problem. They better not come back and say its Team Speak or Vent.
If there is some setting in their software, I have not found it.
If anyone else has had this problem and corrected it, please let me know.
I will keep you all up to date in my findings and troubleshooting.
You're welcome.
I'll wait a couple days to see if you get a response from creative. I'm currently out of ideas and if they don't respond then i'll dig a little deeper and see if i can get anything else.
Also, just something to think about, if you know that there are some wires crossed, then you can adjust your settings to accommodate the cross and still get what you want.
Thanks again Zero :)
This is making me want to do this ----->
So far I received the auto response from creative . .the one where they say "check out knowledgebase or post to the forums" I had done that already.
I am hoping for a better response from them. I cannot say for sure if wires are really crossed anywhere as of yet. Some sound cards have their own inner controls so it may be a setting on those.
I am sure i am not the only one this is happening to as I have the same problem on two different computers, two different Asus Motherboards. A simple PCI card.
I will let everyone know what i find out. If you or anyone thinks to try something else, I would love to know.
I did find in their software, something called Virtual 3D I do not know if that has anything to do with it. Just seems wrong.
You're going to have to clear something up for me that's confusing me. You said two different things.
No matter where I place the voice activation settings, if the mic is on Voice activation (moved closer to shout). My friends reverberate (echoing horribly).
(First post)
Same result of my friends not being able to speak without getting unbearable reverberation on THEIR end. I can hear it if their microphone is open/hot.
( second post)
I interpret the first one to say the following: If your mic is on Voice Activation, then when your friends speak they reverberate (echo).
I interpret the 2nd to say that when you talk, they hear you reverberate (echo).
Try a new headset or mic.
Also, just for more FYI, you didn't specify that you looked through the FAQ. SO here's an entry for echoing http://www.teamspeak.com/?page=faq&cat=client&rate=50#hpwto_fix_echos
Clarifying :)
In the team speak settings. Push to talk works. They do not hear an echo.
Any setting of voice activation, no matter where the slider is produces an echo on their end.
If my friends have their microphones keyed up AND I have on voice activation i hear them echoing as their microphone is picking up what they are hearing on their speakers. When they speak, their mike keyed up, I hear the echo they are talking about (plus my own voice. it is not echoing on their end. (i am just hearing what is coming through their speakers.)
However, if they have a headset . .any of them, they still hear themselves echoeing (several different friends). IF voice activation is on.
ALSO :) IF I mute my microphone completely or remove the microphone plug, they are still hearing themselves echo . . when i have voice activation on.
IF I put my settings to Push to talk and set a key. They can hear me. I can hear them fine with neither of us echoing. They do not hear themselves echo at all when i am on push to talk.
Of course I have heard Nothing from creative labs. I will call them on Monday if I do not hear from them.
I am not hearing myself echo at all. My friends can talk to one another when I am not on, OR on push to talk. They do not hear themselves echo at all. It is ONLY when i am on, and voice activation in any way shape or form is on, that they hear themselves echo. I must deduce I am inadvertently sending them back their own voice through my card.
Again, If i use the old Sound Blaster Live card, I can use the same headset, use voice activation and my friends do not hear themselves echo.
Hope that makes what I am experiencing more understandable. :)
that's some weird stuff. I dug a little and couldn't find anything that fit. It looks like you're already on the right path with contacting creative labs. If they don't think it's a problem, then i would just insist that your sound card is messed up and you want a new one. Good luck.
