Help with Mic

I have a generic Sound card and a 20 Labtec headset, ok. But when I plug the headset in I can't get the mic to work. The headphones work, just not the mic. I don't know if the computer even knows it's there because it doesn't pick up anything in recording. I don't think it is the sound card because nothing else that involves sound has any problems.... Anybody have a suggestion?

First check to make sure you have the mic cord in the right spot on your sound board. Next, if you are using Windows OS then check your recording settings. You can do this easily with home versions of Windows by doublecliking the speaker on your task bar and then going to Properties.
