View Full Version : Odd Question - Distributed Serving & Linking Servers

I have an absolutely bizarre question for you folks. This was brought about by running a couple of different TS servers on home machines for friends, family and colleauges for purposes of private communication between a group of us.

The issue that I've run into time and time again is having insane amounts of lag and bandwidth useage on higher quality codec's when going higher than 8-12 clients on a single server.

Now rather than splitting the group into multiple servers for different purposes, my question is;

Has it been thought about, acheived, being worked on, or possible to link, distribute, connect or otherwise blend multiple RC2 servers so that they share the transmission between each other. That way load sharing can happen over multiple servers, and communication can happen between everyone with little to no lag (more than expected from server to server transmission).

Just a thought... I think that'd be great to be able to do.

Cheers!

I dont think that something like that will turn up soon as it would be a lot of work to implement and the use is very limited. I dont say that it is a useless feature and some people would really profit from it, but the ammount of traffic a TS server is generating is rather low (compared to other applications) and therefor its main target is to run as a single independant server.

You might try lower codecs in case you are experiencing lag problems (which can also occure on clientside, not only serverside)

The GSM 16.4 codec uses up about 2.2 KB/s per user. (might be a tiny bit less but better be on the save side). There are some infos in the FAQ about how much bandwidth is used by other codecs and how you can calculate the total ammount of bandwidth used on the server as well as on the client.
