View Full Version : Feedback/High Pitch Buzz with nForce2 MCP-T Chip Soundstorm
Hi there,
Recently, I bought a new machine and with it a Gigabyte 7N400Pro Motherboard. This motherboard has onboard sound - Soundstorm - courtesy of the nVidia nForce 2 MCP-T chip.
I have tried using Teamspeak 2 : ts2_client_rc2_2029.exe (version: 2.0.29.47)
Whenever I do a local test, I receive a high pitched buzz or squeal through my headphones. When I join a server, I can see my connection as being constantly active, and feedback is being sent to my clan members.
I have tried using windows sound recorder and that works fine.
Any help here would be great.

I used to have problems with that sound chip due to high temps on the south bridge
common problem for loads of people apparantly
what are your cast temps??
have you got a cooler on the southbridge at all?
I take it that you're using a key activation for your MIC and not leaving it to voice activation..?

I am using voice activation not key activation.
However, I recently did set my ts2 to key activation. It appears that I can HEAR fine over ts2, I just cant TALK. Whenever I press the key to talk I start getting feedback again (i.e. the problem mentioned in the first post). This is ok for now because I can at least hear my clan members, but I would eventually like to be able to talk to them too.
What do you mean by cast temps? How do I check that?
I am not sure about a cooler on the southbridge. All I can see that came with my motherboard is North Bridge Fan Connector.

what is the ambient temperature in your case that specifically affects the temperature of the southbridge
by default you have no cooling on your southbridge

in australia I imagine your case temperatures aren't great
I am not sure how to check my case temperature, but I checked all the temperature readings given from the bios (by rebooting my machine) and the cpu temp is at around 39/41 degrees celcius.
I think it just might be an issue with the codecs/teamspeak/soundcard drivers itself (some sorta compatability issue). Reason I say this is because when I decided to test out what would happen if I used Ventrilo, it seemed to work fine.

My problems are similar to what that guy has (if you look a few posts down) as I have an 'AC97 onboard sound as well.
It appears this problem only occurs with Teamspeak - recording sound using windows sound recorder is fine as well as ventrilo - and like that guy, even when I unplug the microphone from the port on the motherboard, I still get feedback.
So, basic conclusion: The onboard sound I have is not compatible with Teamspeak. Whether it be the physical hardware itself or the drivers I am using (the nforce drivers off the nvidia website). As far as I can tell, if I want to be able to talk using Teamspeak, I will have to buy a separate sound card. :(

my problems have been
1. non
2. couldn't connect (solved by uninstalling zonealarm)
3. no mic now (might be a faulty hardware on my headset (will check today)

if your getting feedback then your mic probably isn't muted.
open the Nforce control panal. under the first tab (Main) in the lower right corner should be the microphone settings, check the box that says mute. with the mic muted teamspeak should still work, your just muting the mic on your end.
i have a Abit NF7-S and my cousin has a Asus A7N8X Deluxe, it's not a compatibility issue with the hardware as far as i know as both of our computers can run teamspeak just fine. however, the southbridge does get very hot when using the onboard audio so you should at least get a passive heatsink for it (i put a Vantec copper iceberq on my southbridge)
Muting the microphone through the nforce control panel did nothing.
However, it seems that the newest release of TS2 MAY have fixed the problem I was having. Local tests produce no high pitched noise or static or whatever its called. When I connect to a server, the green indicator light is no longer permanently on (using voice activation) as it used to be.
This is all without muting the microphone on the the nforce control panel.
I will confirm whether or not it is really working once I have a server test done.

all my problems with teamspeak on my nforce2 system have been caused by zonealarm and then a dodgy microphone
Ok. Well, it looks like the new version of TS2 HAS fixed my problem.
This is what I did:
1. Uninstalled old version of TS2.
2. Went to nForce control panel -> muted microphone (the panel on the bottom right under Main)
3. Increased the volume of Input : Record (set to Microphone) and Digitized Input (set to Microphone) to max.
4. Rebooted machine.
5. Installed new version of TS2.
6. I am running Kerio Personal Firewall, so made it auto create a rule for the new version of TS2.
7. Rebooted machine again.
8. Started up TS2 with default properties (i.e. voice activation, etc, etc). Everything works fine now.
Just in case anyone else is having a similar problem, I was having the same feedback problem and it was because my webcam had a mic in it. I disabled the webcam mic and that fixed the problem.
