Linux n00b and TS install

Guys, out of sheer curiosity, and with virtually no Linux expertise at all, I today installed Red Hat Fedora on a 8-year old P II-300 and also installed TS server and client.

Both client and server worked within minutes after downloading

OMG, this is even easier than Windows installs, hats off for the programmers and creators of this TS-flavor, really awesome and well done

errrrmm, one small glitch....

Has been working brilliantly all day, when I tried to make some (more) changes to the server. Like # of users, welcome message etc. Logged in as superadmin

Long story short, it keeps going back to default settings, whatever I do. De-, and reinstalled it, same story, no errors in the logs.

What am I overlooking here

did you hit the "save" button?

does your ts-server have writing permissions to your ts-files?

Yes I did hit "save", many times actually, mostly out of frustration. I would think TS has the right to write to the files (I take it you mean the config files? right), because it worked great for a few hours. There are also entries in the logfile, although no errors.
Only when I started to make even more changes, it fell back to all default settings

Did you install and test the TS server with the same user that runs it at the moment?

If not then it may be a permission problem.
As root change to the TS Server install directory. Then do:
chown -R USER-THAT-SHOULD-RUN-TS .

Nah, that is not it, I ran it all as "root", cause I was trying it out.

Thing I can't figure is that it worked for close to 6 hours and only flipped back to default when I wanted to make more changes. Since then it does nothing than default

Strange. Maybe the db file is corrupted for some reason.
Try to delete server.ini, server.dbs and server.log and start new.

EDIT: He had the same problem, but did not tell how he resolved it.

I even did a complete re-install, but that didn't work either.
Will try what you suggest as soon as I hit home

If it weren't for the fact that I've set up multiple good working Win servers, i would think I am indeed a friggin n00b,


EDIT:just looked at the link, only difference is that I dont have the invalid permission thing, I just go in as superadmin and make changes, push "save" and the default screens come up again

Wow, that is really strange.
And you do that with the same system/browser that you use on your windows servers?

No on the Linux box I use Opera, but it makes me think though.

There we go, BINGO, apparently Opera does not deal correctly with the web-admin interface.

Tried to configure the server settingd from a winXP machine with IE, et voila it works
