Can't switch between wave and direct sound, also muted mic

I have tried everything I can think of, and it comes down to this, I cannot switch between wave and direct sound. I am on wave and It doesn't stay when i press apply it goes back to wave.

I am wondering if this is my problem with the muted mic but I can't verify it

I'm having the same problem....sound drivers up to date, I can hear people but I cannot unmute my mike, nor save a switch from wave to direct sound...Help would be appreciated!
