we need alot more information as to why you are having trouble hosting before we can answer that question. let us know if you are using a NAT device such as a router or any other device. any firewall option you may be using (for instance winxp's built in firewall or some other solution)

ok I have a arescom dsl modm i dont know if it has a firewall im running a 1 gig thunderbird on 98 se os 256 meg ram w/ a 32meg tntvid card ive downloaded the client and the server
I dont think im using any NAT devices

do you get any errors starting up the server? have you corrected the shortcut issue with the server? if not delete the shortcut it created and navigate to the location you installed the server and create a new shortcut.
find out what your ip is for your local machine (run winipcfg to find out) and then goto www.whatismyip.com (easiest and fastest way to find out if your modem is doing NAT) if they are the same then it is not doing NAT if they are different we will need to find out how to forward the proper port back to your computer, hopefully the manual will provide that information.
