text to speech
I was sure this one had probably been brought up again but I searched the forums and could find nothing on it!
I really like TeamSpeak, and use it, both under windoze (only for BF1942) and linux (my primary OS). While researching different voice apps under windows I came across a competing package that uses pretty decent text to speech and wondered if this was something you guys were planning on implimenting and if so, what progress has been made? This was quite a nice feature, especially for announcing *who* was leaving/joining a channel.
Mention was also made about being able to bind either waves to keys or text messages that are somehow sent and then converted to speech client side, although I didn't try these features.
TeamSpeak is great! Keep up the good work.

As far as I know TTS is not in the works, tho it has been discussed and will no doubt be discussed again in the future.

Just thought I'd let you developers know there was someone else interested in TTS. ME!

Our clan just loves TeamSpeak, but one of the things they like about some other voice comm programs is the tts. One scenario where it's useful is client event's like joins/parts that you can't see while in game.
Anyways, just wanted to throw my vote in with a request for TTS.

It would be really really great to have a computer voice announce who left and entered chat and the rooms.. Like microsoft's gamevoice, that is one of the great thigns I love about that program.
I know everytime someone joins we always have to alt tab to see who it is, esp if they dont have mic working only in listen mode.

I agree that this would be great to add, but adding this would double the amount of work involved in generating and maintaining Teamspeak.
The ability of TeamSpeaks SDK may enable even now (I am not sure because I have yet to delv into the SDK) an enterprising TTS expert entity to generate an addon or even co-operating companion product to do such a thing.
I had found one about 5 months ago that looked like a good fit but it was not free. For the life of me I can't find it again....gggrrrrr I am sure I would have saved the bookmark/favorite but as of yet no luck. I will post it here as soon as I find it.
***Search engines have not found it yet either (can't remember the name)***

i doubt that. there's text2speech libraries available. just use them.adding this would double the amount of work involved in generating and maintaining Teamspeak.
after all the TS guys already use gpl'ed libraries (hawkvoice).
they don't need to maintain those, just the framework they use, that is the nice gui and the server program.

Yeah, I can't see how it would "double" the work. There's plenty of text2speech engines out there already. MS has one itself and another voice comm program uses that and just directs you to the correct link to dowload it and install it. All the voice comm program does is pass the text to Microsoft's engine to render.

Well that may be so, it might not be double the work in accual coding, implementing, organising the program itself but there is alot more to providing something to the community for use for free.
You also have to adjust your website, add to your forums, field questions from those wanting quick answers not to mention the time to aquaint yourself with the technology, reorganise the present program so it provides the hooks and ques needed to marry the two differant type of apps., the loss of time of support and development of what TeamSpeak is and what it will be.
All in all, I would think that the community would be much better off finding a couple guys like Ralf and Niels that have the same kind of Love and dedication they do for low bandwidth Voice communications, that are into TTS.
Putting this on two guys and thier supporters is unreasonable and I would think un-needed. I am sure there has to be a couple guys out there that have the knowledge, experience, "desire to give back" at great cost to thier own lives without compensation.
If you guys know so much about TTS then why don't you get together and start to develop something? I am sure you would get alot of assistance from the TS guys to make sure that it would work great together with Teamspeak.
Being separate also provides the user with the option to download and use TeamSpeak with or without TextSpeak and conversely TextSpeak with or without TeamSpeak.
Unless you are saying that they should start selling Teamspeak and making people pay to use it so that they could hire people to help them continue to put out a better and better product.
Sorry, if I seem to be spouting off. I do understand your desire to see TTS incoperated some how. But, I myself can not ask any more of them.

Err, I wasn't really demanding it, or asking for it. I know that in my projects I appreciate it when ppl let me know features they would like incorporated into it....
As for cross-platform t2s engines

License is MIT/X Style. Source available for linux/Windows
Cheers
Might it not be easier tho to just allow the playing of specified sound files when a specific action occurs?
(ON connect, play ...../sounds/username.wav)

Playing certain sounds on events would be a good solution. I could just record the names of all my clanmates and have those playback. It wouldn't be as good as t2s, but it would definitely work.
There'd just have to be a way to match usernames to the correct wav file.

It does this already, for many game actions, just not specific people joining like user$joined=xxxxxxx.wav or somethig.
That would mean everyone making there own wavs for everyone in the unit/club /team or it could be supplied to each other via club site download etc. And then this would have to be added to a client side run database of some sort.
