web admin port less than 1024
It seems that if i attempt to use a webadmin port below 1024, the server can only be run as root. If i run the server as root, it will work just fine, with web admin running on the port I want (85, in my case). I know that anything below 1024 is reserved by IANA. Could this have something to do with it, like a protection in linux or something? Can anyone else replicate this issue?
EDIT: my local linux guru informed me that linux will keep a user from opening a port below 1024 so perhaps this should be mentioned in future documentation?Last edited by jasonvw; 16-04-2006 at 06:19.

That a mere user cannot bind on ports < 1024 is normal unix behavior, it is the kind of network knowledge which we like to require the user to have aquired before they start on setting up servers (teamspeak, or whatever I guess). I don't think it is a good idea to duplicate basic network knowledge in the documentation. Maybe we can find&add some links to pages that teach people what an IP is, what protocols there are, how Ports come into the game etc.
You think my answer is stupid ? Read This:
