    DNS Substitute

My suggestion for Teamspeak 3 is for a substitute to using DNS' with a .cfg file or .txt file that has a certain signature giving the I.P and port. This could actually be better than a DNS because a DNS cannot be pointed to a port, only an I.P using the default port or tagging the port to the end. This could either eliminate the need for DNS' or substitute for those who do not have access to making a DNS. This could also be something a host can offer for those buying a TeamSpeak Server. An example: http://www.my-ts-server-host.com/clan-tags/ Teamspeak will automatically know to look for http://www.my-ts-server-host.com/clan-tags/ts.cfg or .txt and it will connect them to there teamspeak server. You could even make a sub domain that looks to that folder so it will look and sort of act as a DNS but it will be better then a DNS.

So all people will need to put for an I.P. address in Teamspeak is my-ts-server-host.com/ts or there own domain along with what ever folder they put the ts.cfg or .txt in.

I am not sure if this has been suggested before or how hard it would be to make something like this work. But I feel it would be a nice tihng to offer and a nice option for those who are unable to use DNS'.

So, basically you're suggesting that TeamSpeak host it's own listing of servers and how to connect to them? Like it does in the WebServerList already?

No, basically I'm suggesting another option, other then using an I.P. address for the people that don't have access to using a DNS'

If you know how DNS' work then you would know that it replaces the need of an I.P. to connect to Teamspeak which makes it easier for others and yourself to remember what it is you need to remember to connect to it. So instead of remembering up to a 12 digit number you can remember your own domain address or the domain address of your server host. All I'm suggesting is another way of doing that.

And no i don't mean completely replace the need of an I.P. because yes even DNS' use IP' but only the same way a domain name uses an IP

You can do that with a dynamic dns service as well. (dyndns.org is a free option, for example. I use it to keep track of my home network).

I'm still not sure how your suggestion *effectivly* differs from the Web Server list (find your server, double-click, and you're on, no IP memorization required), but I guess I can see, if your IP changes alot, where the "DNS" request would be more useful.

Yes I understand that there are free DNS services out there, many people would rather use there own domain name and there are many people that do not know about these free services. Plus it would also be a nice feature for TS server host to offer there clients, a direct dns to there server with no port to attach at the end.

This is meant for others to join your server as well. There are many people out there that do not even know of that server list and barely even know how to use the local addressbook at all and thats if they even know its there let alone browse a server list that has thousand of other TS servers for a TS server that they may or may not know the name of.

So you're suggesting that, for example, I'd be able to tell friends they can reach my server at wolfstar76.goteamspeak.com ?

I can see where that'd be spiffy.

    yep.
    that or "goteamspeak.com/wolfstar76/"
or even just the domain with out any subdomains or folders as long as they have the ts.cfg or .txt file in there root folder, so just "goteamspeak.com" by itself would work

    SRV records

Just in case the devs and other users weren't aware, DNS CAN handle port numbers in lookups. You do that through an SRV record. Google for it, you'll find it's exactly what you're looking for. Many Jabber/XMPP servers already use it, Active Directory uses it, and it works quite well. That being said, adding support for SRV records in to TeamSpeak would be excellent.

Thanks for the info, this is exactly what I was looking for.
My domain name host dosent appear to support this feature via the web interface (just basic DNS IP address) but I am no expert on this matter so contacted 1and1.co.uk support. Hopefully I get this up and running.

Unfortunity my domain provider wont support changing SVR records so the way I would like to to work in TS3 is

Their could be any number of domain names all mapped to the same static TS IP address via the DNS
The TS sever has a list of domain names (only that map to this server) and will pick the relevant port based on the domain name.

Im looking for a solution too and there doesnt appear to be one for ts.subdomain.domain unless you have the default port on the host.

    So, EXCELLENT suggestion Buzz.

I hope you development guys can do something like that please...

Actually, its be pretty marvellous if you could support this now in 2.xx while we wait for 3.xx

Can you currently use SRV to redirect to a TS server? Doesnt it require a SERVICE name?

If it does work, can you give an example of an actual working entry?
