    Updating translations

    Hi,
I would like about the best practice to update old or current translation file with new version? For example, I'm about 50% done with current beta (5 Dec 23 16:58). If a new version comes out by the time I finish this one, how can I update it with new strings?
    Thanks

Aaa, thanks, a bit missleading title

Bassicaly, there is nothing to be done until further notice?

I might be wrong, but I don't know of any *convinient* way to merge new "fresh" lagos_xx.ts files with older files with already filled translations. Manually merging is no option, way too much work.

So basically it would work like:
    * You download the empty lagos_xx.ts file and start your translation
    * You ignore any updated empty lagos_xx.ts files
    * You send your translation to us (how exactly you send it is still unclear)
    * We run lupdate over your translation
    * We send it back to you

We cannot have one developer scan the forum all day and search for translation files to be updated. Also there is no need to update for every new beta release, they happen too frequently.
Anyways, once we worked something out, we will inform you here in this forum.
    Apart form this:

The easiest way is to convert ts files into qph file which is phrasebook for Qt, and batch translation by linguist.
But , doing it manually is too troublesome.

    You run following command.

    lconvert -of qph -i lagos_xx.ts -o lagos_xx.qph

this command automatically converts all words in the ts file into Qt phrasebook.

you load the qph file by linguist , and do batch translation.

    lconvert is included Qt framework.
In Ubuntu or Debian Linux, qt-dev-tools package includes it.
In Windows,qt sdk include it. you can download from http://qt.nokia.com/downloads

My I suggest some form of subversion control, like SVN? On Linux localizations that I've worked on before, it worked like a charm. There were also some scripts run by i18n maintainers that automated translation files updating.

If not possible, or too complicated, then the bes solution is NOT to translate any beta, only official pre-releases. Like, developers say "OK, we will release this in a week, have your translation ready by then".

And, if possible, any online option to convert lagos_xx.ts lagos_xx.qph, as haru_arc mentioned it? I'm not sure how to run that command on my PC (winXP), and I'm afraid that I may screw up something. And you have to download 280 MB just to convert one little file

    Thanks!

Yes, but notice is there. See sticky thread.

A subversion repository would be cool, but for now collecting translation files via forum should work as well.

In short, please send your translation files to dante696 via PM to get them updated for beta12 (released later today).

Notice in sticky observed, many thanks for explanation and your effort

PS - Is it OK if I send you 75% complete translation, or would you prefer 100%?

I'd say that it doesn't matter, because the only thing they will do is update the base strings in the translation file, so you can translate the new strings that came with the client releases without having to start over.

I've sent my file to dante696, and he promptly updated it and returned it to my email!
    Thanks, dante696 and others

    PS - read THIS

A note to translators from QtLinguist manual:
Greyed out tick indicates an obsolete translation context, i.e. a context that was translated in a previous version of the application but which does not occur in the new version.

    Empty beta16 translation file available:
    http://ftp.4players.de/pub/hosted/ts...lation/beta16/

For updating your existing files, do the usual way by sending them to dante.

edit by dante it's dante not Dante :P
