Permissions + groups problem
Hi all,
First of all I want to say I have searched on the forum and found several topics relating to my problem and I also watched several different tutorial videos here on TS website and on youtube.
The problem is i'm completely confused now and don't know where i'm at..
My problem is probably very simple to solve for advanced TS3 permission users.. but i'm lost.. So i'm hoping one of you pro's will forgive me for asking and is willing to help me out.
My TS3 server is public. I have several public channels where everyone can join in.
1) People automatically joining are guests and should be able to join all the public channels and talk in there.
2) I have a members area which is divided in a CSS section and a LoL section.
-CSS members need to have access to all public channels and the CSS private channels. (but not to LoL private channels)
-LoL members also all public channels and LoL private. (but not css private)
I have tried several ways as seen in different forum topics and videos... but I keep having different kind of problems.
What do i want?
1) I want simply 2 groups "CSS members" & "LoL members" where I can add my members and they have access to the channels they need access to.
2) I do NOT want towork with password channels cause people forget pw's, r people leave and I need to change the pw ect....
3) I tried per client permissions and this worked, but I do NOT want to give client per client permissions... I want to simply add a member to a group and he has access...
If anybody is willing to help me, I really would appreciate it!!! You are also free to send me a pm and join my TS since talking is wway easier then forum typing
thanks in advance!!!

I have seen and read the entire post.
The problem is 5 people giving 5 different opinions.. And I can't seperate what is best for my problem.
What I did now.
Public 1
Public 2
Public 3
Public 4
Public 5
>>> all channels need power 25, i gave the "guest servergroup" and "guest channelgroup" join power 25.
CSS private
LoL private
>>> both channels need power 75, I made a servergroup "CSS" and another "LoL", then i created a channel group "members". I add a member to the right server group, then I drag a member into the correct private channel, give him the channelgroup "member".
Now he can join the public channels and the apointed private channel, but he cannot join the other channel.
I hope this will work. I didn't have the users online yet to test it properly.
I just don't understand why you can't make it more simple, for example.
All people joining = guests and they can enter all public channels.
Then just make a server group and link the private channels they can enter..
Then when you enter a member in that group he automatically can enter de channels ect...
Or I must be missing something

I can't say for sure if this setup will work without testing it. You can make multiple identities to test this if you don't have the members online

If you add your server to your boomarks you can select the server in the MANAGE BOOKMARKS menu then click MORE and choose the indentity to join the server with. Then you right click on the server name and select CONNECT IN NEW TAB.

Yep, i figured it out

And it works pretty good
so far so good...
Now I have discovered another problem....
I have my 2 private channels, and as I described above, I drag a user in the CSS channel give him permissions.. He can now join the CSS channel and all public channels. He cannot join the LoL channel.
So this is what I want.. good.
But now in my 2 private channels I create a sub-channel "hang-out".
The user can still only join the css main channel and not the LoL main channel.. BUT he can join the hang-out in LoL.private ??????????
he can't enter the main but he can enter the subchannel.. that doesn't make sense to me....

Currently sub-channels do not inherit the permissions of the parent channel. This is on the devs to-do list but I have no idea when it will be implemented.

I solved it...
I did the following for the 2 "hang-out" sub channels:
b_channel_join_permanent - checked
I_channel_needed_join_power - 75 (for members)
b_group_is_permanent - checked
and now he can only enter the CSS hang-out and not the LoL hang-out.
I have no clue how the theory of this works but it does work lol.
I personally think it's all a bit complicated for the simple solutions most people need. I understand that the system is incredibly powerfull and you have alot of power to manage everything. But I think some things can be more simply put.

Thanks for posting your solution to the problem! I think with channel permission inheritance it will get a little less complicated.
In reality you are trying to do something that is not the normal operation of TS3. Yes it can do it but it does take a bit of manual configuration to do it.

I properly tested it with with some "test users".
And now it works...
A summary to keep it clear
-I have public channels
-I have private channel CSS with subchannels.
-I have private channel LoL with subchannels.
-I have private Admin channel for admins only.
For all the public channels I set the following:
channel permissions:
i_channel_needed_join_power "25"
b_group_is_permanent "checked"
in my server group "Guest" I have the following set:
b_channel_join_permanent "checked"
i_channel_join_power "25"
b_group_is_permanent "checked"
Now all users connecting can use the public channels!
Then I made the private channel "CSS" and made a channelgroup called "members".
in this channel group I set the following:
b_channel_join_permanent "checked"
i_channel_join_power "75"
b_group_is_permanent "checked"
Notice my members have power 75 and Guests only 25.
Then I gave my private channel called "CSS" permissions.
channel permissions:
i_channel_needed_join_power "75"
b_group_is_permanent "checked"
now VERY important!!!
1) When you want to give a certain member rights to join only that CSS channel (and ofc pub channels), FIRST drag him/her into the CSS channel, right click his/her name, "set channel group" and select the group "member". Now this member will have acces to that private channel but not to the other private channels. You can now do the same for other channels, just make sure you always drag them into the correct channel to give them the rights!
2) Make sure if you create sub-channels, that you give the sub-channels the same channel rights as the parentchannel. However you do not need to drag the user into the seperate sub-channels everytime.
good luck.

It's a nice summary but I still don't get it. Care to explain a bit more how this works?
I'm getting quite fed up with this new way of prohibiting access that's just too tedious to work with.

In his howto>
All users have power 25 by default. This power is needed in (public)channels.
If needed power is bigger(CSS channel 75) than the power that user have(25) he can not enter the channel.
If someone(power 75) who have such power moves him(25) into channel(needed 75), and grant him for that channel only also power 75, within channel_group permissions its only valid for that channel.
All the permissions are saved user can now reconnect / join on his own.
needed = required
I love this kind of permission set, along with few of my favorite others.
