Update
All channels with and without users will exapnd automatically, when it was enabled under the client settings.
This won't be added or changed.
Edit
This topic came up again and our team will think about that feature request, but this does not mean, that this feature will be implemented into the client.Last edited by dante696; 30-11-2012 at 07:45.

Expanding Channels can either be enabled for all the Channels (optionally down to a certain level only - so you wont expand sub sub sub channels for example.) or for your own channel only. With the latter if you join to Channel 1 / Sub 1 / Sub 1.2 you wont see Sub 2.3 (since Sub 2 wouldn't have been expanded).
The Option is located at Settings -> Options -> Design -> Channel Tree.
Channels will be expanded regardless of whether there are users present in those Channels or not, since this thread was all about not doing it for empty ones but it got rejected.

Two other threads, (now locked due to duplication) which also discuss this feature
