Help a noob with server

Hiya,

I'm helping someone set up a teamspeak 2 server which they have rented. They are asking if we can make it so that instead of typing in an IP address to join the server can we have a name instead?

So in the connect box they can type Gamers-Server for the name instead of the IP and it will connect to the server.

Is this possible??

How can we do it?

Cheers,

J

Ask your hoster for his dns-address (if he got one).

Instead of that you could rent your own dns.

See http://www.dyndns.org for free dns-domains.

Then route this dns to your server's ip-address.

You wouldnt be ablet to type 'Game Servers'

For example, if you have a domain (we'll use the TS domain as an example)

ie:
goteamspeak.com

And then you have your ts server on the same server

You could use TS to connect to goteamspeak.com

But if it was on a different server, you could create a subdomain, ie ts

so

ts.goteamspeak.com to connect to that

If the port wasnt default, you'd need port on the end

ts.goteamspeak.com:8800

Sometimes you can get teh subdomain to point at a port too

To do it on a word of your choice, you could host map it, but that just silly and pointless

they have a domain called gamers-crib.com which is their website and they would like to be able to use something like that to connect to their teamspeak but i dont know how to link the two.

I used that dyndns to set something up but all of the suggestions they have for names are a bit long winded.

They said they can have 5 sub domains which they havent used. ts.gamers-crib.com would be good but I dont know how to set it up.

How do you link a domain with a teamspeak ip?

Cheers,

J

Right, if they can have subdomains, you can do it

Do they have a control panel or something similar with who the domain name is registered?

If so, they can use that to create the subdomain, and you have to enter an IP/address for the server, enter the TS IP there

You need to set the IP Address (or the 'A-Record') to another IP

They may have to contact the provider of the domain, but they should be able to do it themself

If they have the domain, using DynDNS is not needed!

Also, would you mind changing the title of this thread to something more meaningful?

Like "Domain name for TS Server"
