[Linux] Attenuate volume of other applications

While using mumble I am able to attenuate the volume of other applications when mumble is active (either I or someone else is speaking). The functionality is built into mumble but I have been told this can be added to TS3 via a 3rd party plugin, I found the 'Volume Control' plugin but this seems to only work with TS3 on a windows platform.

My question is: Can I achieve this in anyway on Linux?

there is a program called "earcandy" which does this for you. But the version you can find on launchpad did not work for me. I modified the sourcecode to make it work again. Tested in Xubuntu 14.04.
