    Hi random TeamSpeak User,

there are many flaws in your logic, let me point out some of them.
The TeamSpeak Android / IOs app has never been free of cost. To setup a server with Discord is easier that is true. The Teamspeak UI does the job. All of TeamSpeaks features are usable through it. If you don't like it get a skin for it.

TeamSpeaks main interest is generating money by selling stuff to you. Discord on the other hand is generating money differently. YOU ARE THE PRODUCT. Discord is saving anything you do on their services. They even tell you about it on their privacy page. https://discordapp.com/privacy
You don't pay with money, you pay with more targeted ads, you pay with YOUR INFORMATION, YOUR PRIVACY.
Come on dude the app is not even 2$. Is your privacy not even worth 2$?

Teamspeak on the other hand is selling licences, apps and so on. They are not interested in selling your privat data/ information.

Sure leave but don't complain when you personal freedom is tackled. You are giving all your info to them freely for them to sell.

    Have a nice day.

Sounds like a troll for me.
And there will always be people who think everything they use has to be free of charge.

Besides, me dont think Discord will stay "free". Once they have enough users they may start charging for their services.
And then congrats? Ranting about Discord and leaving them for another "free" service?

I am pretty that most people moving over to another free service, are not really looking for the catch. They just see uhh its free, I need that.
I am pretty sure Discord will move to a payed model pretty soon. Server costs and development aren't considered cheap. Most people dont think about how stuff is paid as long they dont have to pay money.

Server costs are cheap. For a service that simply transmits data from A to B. Thank god those stats are public. Discord currently uses 16 PiB/M of bandwidth, an average of 50 Gib/s. Based on that, I would expect the server costs to be a 4-digit number of dollars per month.

Development could be cheap, it's a simple product. You don't need many people for that. From the number of people at the gamescom booth, I would guess that TeamSpeak is made/maintained by a handful of people. I don't know, though. Those estimates are for the software, not the support. Support on discord is one twitter account. From the amount of tweets, that can easily be done by one person.

Thing is that those companies who get money from invenstments tend to waste money on IDK what. They got 20 million dollars in investments in January 2016 alone. Under normal conditions (that we obviously don't have here), costs for running a company like Discord does not exceed one million dollars per year.

Given that some tens of millions are now spent on whatever, they need to get this money back to the investors and will be charging for something more than Nitro and stickers.

I'm still baffled as to why people keep putting up a privacy as an excuse for TS over Discord.

It will not work. There's a reason Google's Gmail triumphs nowadays. If you give good service, people are willing to compromise a bit even when they're a product (Gmail's scanning emails for targeted ads).

This fact won't change a bit.

And Discord just works, same as Gmail.

I've suggested TS over Discord and was met with universal no. They simply want to use the easiest-just works, cleanest UI and free.

If this pace continues, Discord will emerge as a plain victor and nobody can catch up anymore. It's a fact, not a lie, not a fabricated story. You may defend other apps to your death, but the world doesn't care.

I don't want Discord to be the only horse racing, but it's just unbelievable other apps simply sit idly and don't do anything.

I personally prefer TS atm, because its decentralized (just look up the last service outage for Skype and Discord in the last months/weeks due to DOS or server problems. Also TS has a better permission System and Channel handling.

But I would really like a webclient for TS servers, so you can join a TS server via a link without the need to install a client. Just like Discord does it. This makes the entrance-hurdle way smaller for new ppl and "non-techies"

Also a modern, clean, reworked UI with better chat handling and modern Chat elements (like picture posting preview etc)would be very nice.

    Competing with a "competitor"

Hello, i have lost a TREMENDOUS amount of people to a "certain" Voice app. I dont want to get in trouble for naming it but im sure we all know.

First question, is there any real attempt to compete with it?

Second, how much can I do to implement some of the features it has? Especially The web based option. People dont want to install teamspeak, they like being able to just use the browser. The teamspeak phone app is a terrible alternative.

Im tired of losing people to it. Overwolf is not enough either. I love teamspeak, but there isnt any sense in me renting servers if i can't get people to stay on it. Sure there is a lot of people that still prefer teamspeak, but the mass majority is using the other app now.

I understand that teamspeak may not have the same target, but for what i (and many others) use it for...teamspeak is very behind the times.

Curious about this as well since we've been using Teamspeak for 12 years, it feels like nothing is being done to compete and I see no announcements of features that will make TS3 pop either, which is sad because the moment they release the features we need we will be done with Teamspeak. We recruit for many games (example PUBG) and it's like for every 1 person that might use Teamspeak there are 20 others using the alternative.

I dont think there is much effort atm. Atleast its not looking like it.

I mean I hope I'm wrong, but I guess the race is kinda lost.

Discord has a far better entrance level (just click a damn link with any 2015+ browser and you are good to go) and is like idiot proof when its coming to server-setup.

It' also got screen and video sharing up to 10 persons with the latest update, so even skype is kinda rip now

And unless the 3.1 server update will have some fleshed out 2016+ features (like a more user friendly permission system and/or link invites via Browser like Discord does, etc) besides the new License system and the 3.1 clients only, I don't see many reasons to choose TS3 over Discord anymore.

The only thing which is still a pluspoint (kinda) is the selfhosting that TS has going. But that's all nowaday.

Discord has screen sharing? This is really a killer feature. Never understood why Teamspeak didn't do this. This is technically feasable since a long time ago.
The convoluted permission system of Teamspeak is a big minus as well. Never understood why Teamspeak didn't go with a group-based ACL approach. These silly powers (or user levels) are a relic of the ancient BBS systems from 30 years ago and severely limit the coexistence of multiple administrators with different, disjunctive, fields of responsibility.

Selfhosting is nice for having your own exclusive place and for hobby server operators. But in the end the only important thing about a voip system is that people are able communicate with each other. And this makes the possiblity of selfhosting irrelevant.

    Pretty much this.

Usability is everything nowadays. Because if it aint working or feels right (aka looks bad) you will leave/abandon it.

I mean everybody does this. Every time you open a website and it looks clunky or weird/not userfriendly, you close it and going to pick the next google result.

Even the Discord invite links with browser joining (no Clientsoftware required) is still one of the huge killer features for me. You can basically send anybody a link and he can communicate with you in seconds. Can't get anymore entry-level-friendly.

Well, Discord says I may not use it in SRWare Iron (Chromium) and Firefox gets issues with voice activation after a few minutes and if I mute myself in Discord, I cannot unmute myself anymore.

For us the moment Discord allows for us to make icons with Server groups so we can display our years and awards we are moving away from Teamspeak.

I've been recruiting for our community for 8 years and I've never had this much trouble getting people on Teamspeak, here's a example of trying to recruit for Playerunknown Battlegrounds which was just moments ago as of typing this.

I even provide the link to download Teamspeak so it's easier for them but that's about all I can do you just can't compete with discord with how easy it is to join it, it's just fact now that people just don't want to use Teamspeak anymore and the fact is that Teamspeak is not announcing anything just tells me Teamspeak is too cocky or something feeling they don't need to and that there is no future with Teamspeak and if they do announce Teamspeak 4 that could be 1-3 years away which they are now behind the competition and nobody will use it as they will all be use to the style of Discord.

Our community usually has between 70-90 on Teamspeak each day on high peaks, I am almost sure if we had discord with the amount of recruiting that I do we would of had 150+ in the voice channels, I really dislike Discord it's ugly AF but it feels like we will eventually be forced to use it because it's what the majority of gamers are using now which if Teamspeak devs took a moment out of their time to look at the PUBG recruit section on Steam you'll see many Looking for Group topics are discord ones, I mean common already at least make an announcement to give us hope you are working on a new Teamspeak or something...

Discord and Teamspeak are two entirely different things. For the longest time people have been between many different chat applications, but now, Discord provides that all-in-one solution that just happens to have optional voice support. People criticise Teamspeak for not having similar, or better, chat functionality as Discord -- but that's because they're dense. They forget the entire existence of Teamspeak... Want a hint? It's in the name, it's not supposed to be another useless chat program! TeamSpeak is a powerful platform built for voice and may be used professional if needed. Discord will never be able to replace that platform, and even if they tried, they'd be 100% limited simply by their business model.

With that said, has anyone ever said Teamspeak killed Skype or vice versa? Well, of course not. The only, real, discussion that should exist here is accepting the fact that Discord killed Skype, IRC, and other miscellaneous social apps. Not Teamspeak. The problem is that Discord still arrogantly advertises itself as a Teamspeak killer, which is pure bullshit,

    Help convincing me

So I'm trying to convince my gaming clan to convert to using Teamspeak over Discord.

So other than Discord apparently selling user data, what other arguments I got in my case for my clan to see the light?
