Discord makes some bold promises on their website. Whether they are able to not only promise but also able to deliver, I don't know. I didn't test their software yet. If they are able to deliver, it is probably the next generation of voip software for gamers, because with Discord there is no need to operate or rent your own server hosting. It's all for free. You just create your (virtual) server according to their website advertising and that's it. The actual server hosting is done by Discord themselves for free.

It's probably still some years away for more than experimental use, since it takes years to get a software to mature like Teamspeak has matured and improved in stability and usability.

If they are able to deliver what they promise in the end, and if the use of the free client and free server hosting has at least as much features as Teamspeak, it's probably the end of the widespread use of Teamspeak. If, on the other hand, the free usage of Discord is somewhat crippled and limited compared to paid use, then Teamspeak will continue to be used.

This way or the other, it is a blessing for us users, because a competition to Teamspeak comes up, and competition means technological advancement. Until now, there is no real competition for Teamspeak, so the technological features of Teamspeak stagnate since long ago.

Well it's definitely not there yet, anyway. No sub-channels, slow connection times (for me anyway).

I'd also not feel comfortable trusting them with my whole communiites communication. That's one of the benefits of Teamspeak, because unlike what Schlumpi said, that's exactly what I like about Teamspeak: being able to run your own services.

But it's all purely speculative anyway for now. The players will decide.

@Schlumpi: There is actually "competition" like Ventrilo and Mumble - its a matter on how you define it
Also Shockvoice would be something nice, if the devs ever wake up and finish the product.

    Isnt this "RaidCall" thing similar?

Also, if Discord stays free is speculative. Maybe they just try to get an userbase and then charge for it.
They claim "the core functionality" will remain free - but who defines what "core function" means?
(Sounds a bit like those Pay2Win BrowserGames)

@Dante: Sorry for mentioning foreign/competetive products
If its not allowed please edit/remove post.
    Thanks.

Discord seems to lag more often than not for me and other players, the quality of audio is better on Teamspeak than it is on Discord.

I think competition would be good – if TeamSpeak decides to accept that challenge (because of the big amount of money they made so far, I doubt they do). It's sad that there is basically no competition to YaTQA either.

They once said decorative features will be paid. Not sure if that will earn them enough money, though.
Actually, noone ever asked me to use Discord. Everyone is using TeamSpeak.

    licenses....

First post ever so I will begin with a HELLO!

First of I personally find Teamspeak to be the best alternative out there right now. I have never tried Discord and hope I never have to. There are other options out there that I have tried but they are not quite there yet. These are all alternatives I have setup and hosted myself, I am not interested in relying on other companies to host or handle my data.

I have no issues whatsoever running Teamspeak, I have been running my personal server for friends many years now and never ran into any problems that I could not solve with Google or these forums.

The one and only issue I have are the 32 slots I am limited to on a server with no license. I know of NPL yes, but the requirements for NPL are just to much hassle for me as a private person to even start caring about, putting up a homepage / forum and also "forcing" my friends to use it (since you need a active community for NPL) just to keep Teamspeak running is nothing I will waste time on. And since NPL is the only free way of getting more slots I see no other solution than looking on the alternatives now and then to see if they are getting better than Teamspeak. I mention free since there are free options out there I could use instead, I just hope it does not have to come to that. I am not craving things to be free, but since this is something I host and handle on my spare time asking nothing in return from my users I won't throw loads of cash on it, like I said in that case there are alternatives I could resort to.

I too hope Teamspeak will be the future of voice communication but for that to happen I really think where they should start looking, is over their licensing alternatives. Functionality wise they are already the best alternative, at least for me and the small community of friends I play with. I can't even mention one thing I think they could improve right now, everything just works! And that's great!

As a suggestion with all my "ranting" a "NPL Light license" maybe could be an alternative? Where a static IP could be enough, skipping the website / community part. Say 256 or 128 slots?

Or a one time purchasable license instead of the AAL, X amount of slots for X amounts of dollars one time fee.

Anywho, these are my thoughts on the current situation where voice communication for gaming is seeing a increase in alternatives out there. Best of luck to Teamspeak and keep up the good work!

Now that I used Discord more, I can say for the current version of Teamspeak: Goodbye.

Using Teamspeak in comparison to Discord is like using an old-school cell phone in comparison to a smartphone. Having resources like the permanent chat with integrated attachments and screen sharing, as well as being a global user regardless of on what server I am actually online, is so useful and broadens the reach of your communication. You don't need any extra medium to host any resources.

A Discord server is all groups and tiny to medium sized communities need. No forum, no web hosting - just a discord server. It serves voip and all resources that members casually want to share on a permanent basis. It's all much more integrated. Web client, standalone client, smartphone client. All the same. Seamless. Easy and intuitive permission system for server operators.

Apropos intuitive: with Teamspeak, you need to know how to use it. With Discord, you just use it. It's also more clearly laid out as a whole, since it doesn't depend on a main menu bar. This is a legacy of traditional Windows desktop application design.

Actually, Discord is a messenger for groups. A messenger where you can always stay online if you like. Most easy and intuitive on your smartphone that is always with you. A messenger with optional voip group communication support. You stay seamless online. You just leave the voice chat but stay in the text chat. Staying up to date with notifications on your smartphone, if you like/need that. You can use it as a bigger version of Whatsapp, if you need more than one messaging channel with picture attachments for a group.

In Teamspeak, you can only speak. It's crippled if you cannot speak. Chat is only good for ad-hoc sharing of links and debugging if someone's headset doesn't work. These days, that's not enough. It's a kid's toy in comparison to Discord.

Why shouldn't I switch to Discord?

Give me some good reasons not to switch to discord. I have run my community on teamspeak for over 3 years and it peaks up to 60 people on weekends. Recently some of my community members have started using Discord and they are trying to convince me to stop using teamspeak all together. What are some significant advantages of teamspeak over Discord so I can have a counter argument besides the fact that I just don't want to?

According to SnowDapples who posted the following on: https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comme...scord_for_our/

[–]SnowDapples 51 Punkte vor 5 Monate

This sentence here sounds pretty hardcore to me:

By uploading, distributing, transmitting or otherwise using Your Data with the Services, you grant to us a nonexclusive, transferable, royalty-free, sublicensable, and worldwide license to use Your Data, subject to the Company’s Privacy Policy.
This means: You lose any right you had on your data. Discord can sell your data to anyone. And the best thing: You cant do anything about it.

And ^this is the reason why we should avoid Discord at all cost.
Imagine this: You just wrote a paper you wish to publish a paper but you gave it to your buddy to check for any errors. You've sent the paper via Discord. Discord now sells a license to [Enter name] and [Enter same name] decides to publish it for 4.99$ while yours is 9.99$. You even won't get a penny from that company discord sold it to.

Same with a picture you made, text you wrote, words you spoke.

Most users give 0 f**** about their rights though. Like WhatsThat, FakeHook and other huge companies that are "free" but make money with selling your data.

One should note that these lines can be found in many centralized communication system's ToS.

    Opinion

Tbh I don't mind using discord once, But in the end teamspeak has more advantages over Discord for many reasons. Plugin support is very easy in my opinion when it comes to teamspeak and I enjoy having my unique plugins that allow me to control my clan alot more easier then other voice comm systems provide currently.. I also dislike the fact that we can't even host our own servers? What is so bad with us hosting our own servers tbh?

Discord turns me off because of that reason mainly for the sole fact that I don't wanna trust my info and clans communication on a system that wont even allow us to be able to host the servers ourselves. I've had more issues when it comes to voice comms with discord then teamspeak 3 tbh and I've used both programs since they basically came out.
