Question Best practices for CLIENT_META_DATA ?

Over the years i realized that (not all) plugin devs are selfish.
Most plugins like (ACRE or TFAR for example) just overwrite CLIENT_META_DATA without thinking that other plugins might want to use it. ATLEAST APPEND PLEASE!

So my question is what do you think is the best way to utilize metadata?

My current way is to replace if exists/append a XML section containing the data from that plugin with regex.
I know XML is not a very space-saving format but it's pretty "failsave" and i prefer that over saving some chars. Also it's pretty easy to parse from a blob since it has open and close tags ('<{0}>(.+?)</{0}>')

Hasn't metadata been deprecated and replaced by another interface?
