What Linux distribution to choose ?

    Hi @ all,

I want to set up a ts3 server for our gaming clan, and therefore I want to rent a virtual root server from hosteurope.de.

They offer their servers with one of the following operating systems:

    Debian 5.0 (Lenny) 64 bit
    Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (64-Bit)
    CentOS 5.4 (64-Bit)

What Linux distribution should I chosse best for a TS3 server ?

    Thanks in advance
    Frank M.

The question is not, which one you should choose.

The question is, have you any knowledge about linux and administrating it. If there is no knowledge, then the other question is oblosolete. Without knowledge your server will be a gift for everyone with the knowledge about linux.

    Hi Master_D,

thanks for your reply. Id say my linux knowledge is average, I did some work with SuSE linux and Im able to configure and administer a system without the config tools like yast.

But Im not the crack in securing the system and administering the firewall without the config tools. When all of the distributions I mentioned are ok for ts3 then I should use the one that provides the best config tools. Do you have any suggestion ?

    Thanks and regards
    Frank

Ubuntu is the far most easy one of these three, but from my experience with linux. I would choose CentOs out of the choices you have. It is a reliable server os built upon redhat.

Even though personally i would have installed Slackware, but that is no choice here.

I think the better question to ask is if the host your are considering has decent bandwidth and latency between the server and parties which will use it. I personally run Ubuntu myself (but have run many other flavors of Linux distributions in the past including CentOS, RHEL, Debian etc).
