    They could provide such a service too. Maybe not directly with SSH, but there is also stunnel.

    You can set a simple VPN with authentication before accessing to the Telnet interface.

    In fact i think Telnet is clearly outdated too, but ssh is not a good tool to do it. Currently most of API use the REST JSON standard because it's the simpliest way to integrate tools where we need.

    If you dont need to expose it you can use it on local interface, you can easily hide the API behind a webserver and use it with other tools to protect the API against attackers.

    This is why I'm working on this feature, a simple REST/JSON interface to be exposed, wich use the serverquery interface locally.
